My wife copied pictures from a camera to the computer and she has no
idea where they went. She says she created a zip file too but has no
idea where that is either.....

The camera has a memory stick that goes into the computer. She said it
took hours for the pictures to download. I'm having trouble finding
where these files got saved. Is there a way to determine that using
the operating system? Would the OS change the date of the files when
copied to the computer?

Any help appreciated.

If she just used Windows Explorer, they'd be in "My Pictures"

if she used a specific application , then just open that

Yes, that sounds like a woman to me.
:-)

There are several ways I can think of. The most accessible would be a
Windows search.
Cameras have their recognisable name-giving characteristics. Some of
mine have names like "DSC_0023"; others (a Samsung camera) "SAM_098".
Then you can search on date written.
Or on extension type; .JPG is common.

Good luck. I could find them within minutes. I'm fully proof against
female recklessness!.

Try downloading them again and see where the default download folder is
set to. No pictures on the camera? - take some more and try it.

Use the Everything freeware, search image files, sort by date.

More-detailed explanations:

I. Inspired by Ed Cryer
1. Put the memory card back into the slot and look at it in Windows
Explorer.

2. Browse on that card for a file with a distinctive name, such as
DSC_0023.jpg, as mentioned by Ed Cryer.

3. Search your hard drive for that file. It will be in the directory in
question

II. Inspired by mick
1. Go into the copy dialog again.

2. Look to see where it offers to save the files That's the directory in
question.

3. Exit from the program without actually copying, since you will have
the info you want.

If all else fails, try examining the camera with
recovery software such as:
http://www.icare-recovery.com/

Just connect the camera to the computer and such
software can recover the old photos, but only if
they're not covered over by new ones.

If she just used Windows Explorer, they'd be in "My Pictures"

They may - or may not - be in the My Pictures folder. It all depends if
you have changed the default for where downloaded pictures are saved.

Others have offered various good suggestions, but it all else fails, try
using the Windows 'Search' (or is it 'Find' in W7?) facility, and do a
search by 'Date Modified' (which is the date the pictures were
downloaded). If your pictures are in JPG format, narrow things down to
JPGs by searching for "*.jpg" (star dot JPG) for the date modified.

That would perhaps be useful if the files on the memory card got lost,
but that isn't what happened here.

Actually that would work. "Undelete" the files on the camera, start the
download, and pay attention to where the system complains about the same
files already there!

I recovered some very old photos from my sister's
camera after she lost them on her computer. It
seems the oldest photos on the camera card are not
necessarily the first to be covered over by more
recent ones. Sometimes I use wiping software to
wipe all old photos from my camera card just in
case I lose it.

If you can't find them on the PC, she probably "moved" them to
the trashcan. In which case they will still be on the memory card (but
invisible). Use Recuva on the memory card, and save them somewhere
"visible", like a new folder on your desktop.
DO NOT TAKE any pictures with that memory card until you have
recovered the old photos, or they will be overwritten.
Read the docs or tuts before you use it.

(there is a portable version on the page, search for "Builds",
if you prefer portable)

Go to Start, type "cmd", right-click when it finds "cmd"
and select "Run as Administrator".

That opens a Command Prompt windows with Administrator
privilege.

Then, in the Command Prompt window, try:

cd %userprofile%\downloads

dir /S C:\ c_listing.txt
notepad c_listing.txt

Running as admin, might get more of the files to list.

That puts a text listing in the user account you're
working in, in the Downloads folder. You can modify
the path to suit your tastes (using the cd command).
Modern Windows does not like writing files in the
root of disks, so don't try to store the file as
C:\c_listing.txt .

That file should have a listing of everything on
the C: drive. Look for ZIP files. Look as Gene suggested,
for collections of DSC* files. Or look by date,
like 11/01/2013, for the newest files.

I tried to find a more fancy way to do it, and
wasn't making any real progress. (There are probably
third-party tools for listing files, but I don't
keep track of those.)

In Vista, the Advanced Search window in there is
"almost human". It includes the option to override
the search index and search everywhere. If you use
Windows_key F in Windows 7 or Windows 8, the search
isn't as graphically pleasing. There are still
"features" such as ext:jpg to allow searching
for all JPG files. But in this case, I don't know
if that'll be enough or not. And to me, the ability
to override (in an emergency), a mis-configured
indexer setup, is important to not missing anything.
I spent considerable time setting up my indexer,
to "not miss anything", and that is a real PITA.
It takes a lot of work to capture everything
that way. Indexers are typically set up to
be more selective, and then if you're on an
Easter Egg hunt, the Windows Search is useless for
that.

I have other means of listing everything, but
those methods do not always include date and size
info. The "dir" command does that, so leaves
more breadcrumbs for this particular search need.
For listing NTFS, I use "nfi.exe", which lists
files by their file number in the $MFT. I also
on occasion use Sysinternals "contig.exe", which
lists everything and tells you what items are
fragmented. Only the older versions, allow
using the tool like a file lister, as in

contig_2006 -v -a -s C: c_listing.txt

The very latest version, would not start at
the top of C: and list everything. I had to use
www.archive.org, to dredge up older copies, because
I remembered that feature working years ago. I
expect this was an "improvement in security" or
the like.

HTH,
Paul

Methinks that sounds like misogyny. I'm the woman in the family who's
always fixed the males' messes. Can't teach them a damn thing--they
regularly screw things up and call me.

Anyway, Ed, I think those statements are beneath you.
