Hands-free, not holding a tablet-keyboard.

My (once nice) PC (prematurely) died (motherboard?).
Since my (once nice) PC (prematurely) died (motherboard?),
it's taken me 6 (sleepless) days to recover; to wit (rounding): 1 day to come to grips, buy an Amazon Fire tablet, and order parts. 2 days to get the parts ( Amazon Prime ). 1 day to piece it together ( no hardware issues ). 3 days to load+modify software. I had to do a clean install ( shutdown /r /o ) of Win10 v1903; contrary to MSI support, my original copy of Windows wasn't needed. To save time, I activated it using a well-known key. I had to re-install+re-configure all of my apps+fonts too; _ plenty _ of tangents, of course. Upgrading to Firefox 69 was a _ Royal _ pain, as expected; each upgrade destroys my previous settings in a spectacular way. I used the "Chrome Inspector" ( a.k.a. "Browser Toolbox" ); see: http://Jeff-Relf.Me/userChrome.CSS.TXT http://Jeff-Relf.Me/userContent.CSS.TXT I'm not done modifying my copy of Visual Studio 2019 initially, I had to use Notepad++ instead. For some _ strange _ reason, my PC simply got more-n-more stable with time; it's fine now. My firmware was only 1 month older than the current release; but I updated it anyways. ( MSI MPG z390 Gaming Edge AC ) Motherboard Drivers: M-Flash BIOS, April 1, 2019, vA50 -- E7B17IMS.A50 Chipset Driver, May 8, 2019, v10.1.17968.8131 Network Drivers, July 30, 2019, v24.0.0.11 RST ( SSD, M.2 ) Driver, May 8, 2019, v17.2.6.1027 Wi-Fi Driver (unused), July 30, 2019, v21.30.1.0 RealTek Audio (unused), Aug 7, 2019, v6.0.8765.1 iGPU (unused), March 6, 2019, v25.20.100.6471 I used MSI's "Mystic Light" to turn off the motherboard's LEDs. The CPU fan has an LED controller on its cable; I turned it off. On the ATX case, I use a front panel button to turn off fan LEDs; I covered the _ Bright _ blue "On" LED with 4 layers of Gorilla tape; I left the red "hard disk activity" LED as is ( it's barely noticeable ). Front panel USBs: 2.0, 2.0, 3.0 Back: 2.0, 2.0, 3.1, 3.1, 3.1 Gen2, 3.1 Gen2 TypeC ( 20 volt, 100 watt {hot}, 8k 60Hz +audio ). Aug 12, 2019: 130 $, Loctek Monitor Arm, Max: 33 lbs, 34 inch monitor. PCIe "970 EVO Plus"; Reads/Writes 3.5/3.3 GegaBytes/Sec.
Philo replied ( to me ):
Since my PC died, it's taken me 7 (sleepless) days to recover. I had to do a clean install ( shutdown /r /o ) of Win10 v1903; I would just have placed the HD in a new machine. That's what I did, hence the clean install. The boot–SSD is 4 years old. The fanless power supply is 7 years old. The laser printer+scanner is over 8 years old. The 34 $ g600 mouse lasted nearly 3 years; I should've replaced it sooner, but it was "good enough". I wear out mice like nobody's business. The motherboard died after 5 years. P.S. I just bought a 130 $, 512 gig, USB 3.1 "Corsair Flash Voyager GTX" Drive; USB 2.0 compatible. Reads+Writes 440 MegaBytes/Sec. Also, I bought a 228 $, 1 TeraByte, PCIe Gen 3.0 x 4 "970 EVO Plus"; Reads/Writes 3.5/3.3 GegaBytes/Sec. "Samsung Data Migration" will clone my current SSD. Some say they had to enable NVMe in the UEFI(bios). And I bought a 80 $ Corsair CX Series 650 Watt power supply. Win10 is one of the best operating systems I've seen for surviving a transplant into different H/W. It booted right away, but it was unstable for some unknown reason; it got more stable with time, even when I did nothing; power supply problem ? I probably would have looked for an identical mobo on ebay first Newer motherboards are so much better+faster, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to upgrade. Win10 would probably need re-activating. Yes, but I won't bother with that, even though I could. |

Scant peripherals.
Big_Al replied ( to me ):
3'022 $ Total, before Seattle's 10% tax. You forgot something in your price list. I got $2,862. No, 3'022 $ is right, Google: 130+34+80+80+296+34+178+80+150+64+142+114+978+350+ 160+152 Also, I just dropped another 482 $, after Seattle's 10% tax, for: 130 $, 512 gig, USB 3.1 "Corsair Flash Voyager GTX" Drive. 228 $, 1 TeraByte, "970 EVO Plus"; Reads/Writes 3.5/3.3 GigaBytes/Sec. 80 $, Corsair CX Series 650 Watt power supply. I think my 7-year-old power supply was failing (initially). Looking at Windows' event viewer, I noticed that power supply failures were dropping cores/threads ! But a lot of that is not the PC. A Wi-Fi Router? Fire Tablet? Printer? Without peripherals, a PC is just an overpriced tablet. This is the problem with Apple: scant peripherals. I couldn't have done it (upgraded) without the Fire Tablet; it's really nice, in an emergency -- much better than nothing. My 8-year-old printer is _ vital _ to my business; it's a real workhorse; ultra-cheap and long-lasting. But I will say it sounds like a nice rig. Should scream. I never have had a PC over 3.2 GigaHz. Were it not for "gaming mode", mine would also be 3.2 GigaHz. Hence the "copper, water-in-a-vacuum HeatPipes" CPU Fan. |

You're not into computers.
Some rando replied ( to me ):
Without peripherals, a PC is just an overpriced tablet. This is the problem with Apple: scant peripherals. nonsense. Tablets and pcs are designed for very different use cases. Tablets are for when, sadly, you can't have a PC. There's no shortage of peripherals for Apple. Depends on how you define the word "shortage". Fewer apps and fewer peripherals would be okay, provided you're not into computers. |

A tablet is better than nothing, assuming "nothing" is your _ only _ alternative. Other than that, I've no use for it. If you're a fashion model, or a rock star, the story is different. I'm getting 3.5 GigaBytes/Sec Read|Write on my TeraByte NVMe drive.
Scott Doty wrote:
# ethtool enp2s0 | grep Speed Speed: 10000Mb/s [ that's my battlestation ] I'm getting 3.5 GigaBytes/Sec Read|Write on my TeraByte NVMe drive. ..4/.31 GigaBytes/Sec Read/Write on my half TeraByte USB 3.1 stick. CrystalDiskMark, default settings. It really does make a difference; my 4.25 GigaHz i7-8700 (gaming mode) system feels extremely fast. Task Manager says my ddr4 RAM is running at 3 GigaHz (gaming mode). All the same, I wouldn't have upgraded if by old motherboard hadn't died. Now I have a loose i7-5775c and a terabyte SATA III SSD that I don't know what to do with. My new SSD and USB stick are both clones of my older SSD. Everything exclusive to me, including most of my apps, are under: "C:\__"; when things are in a good state, I mirror them to the USB drive thusly: ShadowSpawn C:\__ R: RoboCopy R: A:\__ /B /XF __.TXT /XD Tmp Del /NDL /mir /J /NJH /NJS /NP /UNILOG:C:\__\X\__.TXT Despite spanning 130 gigs and 180,000 files, it's super quick. Without ShadowSpawn, many files couldn't be backed up ( because, on a live/running system, they're locked ). |
