I read a science fiction book a couple years ago
where it described a future human civilization that
was so advanced that they mastered time travel
backwards. They determined that time travel
into the future was impossible since there is
no future existing - only the concept of future.

This happened millions of years into what would
be our future.

So they came back billions of years and *arranged*
things so that matter (stars, planets, etc.) from the
future, via constructed wormholes through space
and time, was sent back to their past over a period
of billions of years so that it caused the universe to
stop expanding and they had it figured out that not
only would the universe stop expanding but neither
would it contract. It remained static. In this fashion the
humans assured themselves an infinite amount
of time and almost as much space in which to live by
moving themselves back through the worm holes to
the past where matter was spontaneously appearing
in the universe until it was stabilized.

They had long since conquered death.

So what they did is hasten the demise of their future
universe, which was expanding into an empty, cold,
uninhabitable space and traded it for a present
universe that would be inhabitable forever.
