Are you trying to suggest that David is one of Carroll's many names (or
vice versa... that they are the same person)?

If so I find it hard to believe.

It's almost a push-button industry.

You bring a bag of money, give a list of voltages and
currents, indicate what "certs" you want, device dimensions,
what protection features (OCP,OVP,UVLO,whatever), and
you can have a PSU made for you. (snip)

Again, you've provided the insight into the industry. No need to spend
a lot of money doing the research, only to find out that it can be done
by someone with experience and expertise at a much lower cost.

Yes, but "cheap" was not his point. Obviously, the customer has full
discretion on the quality level specified. There's a wide range, from
the cheapest consumer crap, to industrial, to medical and
aeronautical.

Apple need not specify even industial-quality power supplies, but, as
a vendor of premium-priced consumer products, they would be expected
to specify something better than the bare minimum, something expected
to provide a long service life.

And, of course, long service life is not the only desirable trait.
Where ever I have written "quality level", above, one could substitute
"performance level".

Performance in power supplies, as in most products, is defined by the
ability to produce a desired output or result, and the ability to
tolerate variable inputs or conditions.

I had no issue with the one in my machine. It
looked industrial grade, but wasn't redundant
or anything. I didn't take it apart to appraise it.

Some consumer machines are rated to 50C ambient.
We had one HP PC in the lab that we used to take
into the walk-in thermal chamber, and I think some
of the staff took that up to the full 50C and recorded
readings inside the chamber while the DUT was in
there. There was never an issue with that PC.

Whereas I have one purchased computer here, the
user manual said it was only good to 35C. It was
one of those "temperate climate" PCs :-) I don't
think the ratings go too much lower than that.

Speaking as someone who is not afraid of the command line,
why would anyone post anything Linux-related to alt.comp.os.windows-10
(particularly to the extend as is being done!)?

It's like posting about cooking in a car-repair forum.

Whether you are "pro" or "nay" on Linux, posting about it in
alt.comp.os.windows-10 just pollutes the
newsgroups in general, which are struggling enough as it is. People with
an Internet in Linux will have little trouble finding resources to help
them.

Here is a summary (hope this "shared wisdom" is helpful):

1) "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
2) "If everyone would sweep his or her own doorstep, the whole world
would be clean!".
3) "Think before you post!"

Most of it is crossposted by a troll named "snit".
He is a nasty troll who stalks people and spends his time disrupting
newsgroups.

Snit is also behind the flood bot which is currently
invading comp.os.linux.advocacy and alt.os.linux.
He uses the name Steve Carroll for those posts.

Here is a little about the snit troll:

https://web.archive.org/web/20190529...icpenguin.com/
snitLieMethods.html

Psychopath Snit Michael Glasser's Techniques For Lying

1. Lies by simply making things up.

2. Lies by omission.

3. Lies by intentionally misunderstanding or misinterpreting.

4. Lies by exaggeration.

5. Lies by quoting out of context.

6. Lies by misquoting.

7. Lies by ignoring refutations of his lies and other bad
behavior. This enables him to always claim that he "won"
the debate. It is the height of dishonesty.

8. Lies by introducing nonsense, e.g., "Marshmallow Men".

9. Lies by invalid generalization.

10. Lies by reversing implication, e.g., "Firetrucks are red,
this apple is red, therefore this apple is a firetruck."

11. Lies by "straw man" -- falsely attributing a bogus (often
exaggerated) claim to the person he's attacking, then refuting it.

12. Lies by claiming the person he's attacking "changed his story"
or "moved the goalposts" whenever the person clarified what he
said in order to refute Snit's previous lie about it.

13. Lies by claiming the person he's attacking "whines" or "babbles".
He never says that about his anti-Linux propaganda partners.

14. Lies by claiming the person he's attacking "ran away" if they
don't obey his commands and meet his demands exactly.

15. Lies by claiming that the person he's attacking is a member of
"the herd" and therefore is not capable of independent thought
and should not be listened to. Snit uses this attack only
against Linux users.

16. Lies by refusing to make common-sense connections among facts
that he's given. In that way he stalls or kills the discussion.
He ignores facts without explicitly refuting them, which allows
him to kill the discussion without looking bad.

17. Lies by introducing personal attacks and nonsense arguments
and claims into the discussion, in order to motivate the person
he's attacking to withdraw from the discussion. Glasser then
claims victory.

18. Lies by refusing to believe anything remembered by the person he's
attacking, and saying that it's irrelevant, when it isn't. Example:
"some recollection of what you think you remember from 10 years ago
is not on topic or of interest".

19. Lies by claiming that the person he's attacking is mentally ill.
He repeatedly offers to find the person help in overcoming his
alleged "illness". Snit Michael Glasser is a psychopath who
pretends to be a psychologist.

20. Lies by falsely attributing negative emotions to the person
he's attacking, when they haven't displayed any at all.

Examples: "shows rage", "got really, really angry. Furious",
"absolute *rage*", "freaks out", "lashes out", "lash out
with anger", "major hate-spewing", "really hates learning",
"****es the herd off", "lash out with *extreme* hatred and anger",
"*major* attack mode", "humiliating", "getting ****ed off",
"Such hatred and anger from you", "you are just freaking out.
Enraged. Completely unable to control yourself.", "freak out mode",
"You are on a hate-filled rampage", "Filled with rage and obvious
hatred", "hate-filled, enraged lies, attacks, insults, name calling",
"lash out with such fury", "you freaked out", "has you ****ed off",
"spewing such hate-filled lies and attacks", "you are so upset
recently", "Amazing how little self control you have",
"hate-filled attack mode", "freak out and go into major attack
mode", "hate-filled, fear-filled attacks", "hate-and-fear-filled
attacks", "you run away spewing hate-filled attacks", "fearful",
"hate-filled dishonest attack rants", "Completely irrational,
hate-filled nonsense", "run and whine and attack...fear",
"get angry and lash out", "runs away crying", "hate-filled spree
of attacks", "freaked out even more! Holy cow!", "massive
hate-filled irrational rage", "irrational hate filled attacks",
"hatred and feelings of persecution", "enraged... unable to focus
or think. He is in a massive hate-filled irrational rage where all
he can do is lash out", "lashes out with hate-filled rants",
"You are enraged... beside yourself with anger. Unable to control
yourself", "obvious hatred", "You have a strong persecution complex",
"Holy cow! You lost it! You became enraged and increased your name
calling and accusations and insults. You just could not stop yourself
- you were out of control!", "This was too much for you. Wow. You
just completely lost it", "you just attack, attack, attack. ...
Wow... you really have lost it. I wish you the best!",
"threw a toddler tantrum", "cannot stop himself from posting
outrageous hate-filled attacks and insults and lies",
"clearly very frustrated", "you lash out with insults, attacks,
and your ever-present view of your persecution", "pretty much
belittles anyone", "special form of arrogance and conceit",
"put others down", "calm down", "amazingly bent out of shape",
"you are so filled with hatred and anger and the inescapable need
to call people names", "You are a very, very angry person!",
"so angry and out of control"

Not a coincidence if you know your electronics well enough.

i do, and it is very much a coincidence. stepped sine waves won't cause
the trash not to empty.

The UPS stepped output can cause harmonics that the iMac power supply
can't handle. I put a new UPS pure wave output and the problem went away.

false. imacs have no issue with stepped sine waves, nor do other macs.

But not in my case. Is it a faulty ps in the iMac? Could be, but the
pure sine wave output is a much better options.

pure sine wave is better but it cannot cause the symptoms you describe.

So you say.
Again, your credentials?

Whether you put much
trust in the GeekSquad or not, they did say that some iMacs are affected
by this.

geeksquad? seriously?

Seriously. Not all of them are incompetent, and so far their
explanations do make sense.

So I went up to another store and asked the same question.
Funny that the store won't stock the cheap stepped UPS, but they do
stock the better ones.

that means nothing.

Not to you, but it does to me.

you also shouldn't be running anything off a ups for an extended period
of time anyway. it's for brief amounts of time, to safely shut down.

The UPS has about 2 hours of power before I have to shut down the iMac.

higher end upses that last that long normally are pure sinewave.

Yes, that is why I don't use the el-cheapos.

that said, i've run several different macs, pcs, upses and many other
devices for 30+ minutes off a cheap ups (stepped sine) without issue.

But not her iMac. It is not fun to have a hanging process. You have
to, in this instance, bring up Activity Monitor and force quit Finder.
Which, in this case, also mandates a restart.

no it definitely doesn't require a restart, nor is activity monitor
needed to force quit finder.

Hah. Now I know you are a fraud and troll.

Yep. On consumer products, there are a lot of short-cuts made to lower
the cost, and on an iMac also size and weight.

"illness". Snit Michael Glasser is a psychopath who pretends to be a
psychologist.

20. Lies by falsely attributing negative emotions to the person he's
attacking, when they haven't displayed any at all.

Examples: "shows rage", "got really, really angry. Furious",
"absolute *rage*", "freaks out", "lashes out", "lash out with anger",
"major hate-spewing", "really hates learning",
"****es the herd off", "lash out with *extreme* hatred and anger",
"*major* attack mode", "humiliating", "getting ****ed off",
"Such hatred and anger from you", "you are just freaking out.
Enraged. Completely unable to control yourself.", "freak out mode",
"You are on a hate-filled rampage", "Filled with rage and obvious
hatred", "hate-filled, enraged lies, attacks, insults, name calling",
"lash out with such fury", "you freaked out", "has you ****ed off",
"spewing such hate-filled lies and attacks", "you are so upset
recently", "Amazing how little self control you have",
"hate-filled attack mode", "freak out and go into major attack mode",
"hate-filled, fear-filled attacks", "hate-and-fear-filled attacks", "you
run away spewing hate-filled attacks", "fearful", "hate-filled dishonest
attack rants", "Completely irrational, hate-filled nonsense", "run and
whine and attack...fear",
"get angry and lash out", "runs away crying", "hate-filled spree of
attacks", "freaked out even more! Holy cow!", "massive hate-filled
irrational rage", "irrational hate filled attacks",
"hatred and feelings of persecution", "enraged... unable to focus or
think. He is in a massive hate-filled irrational rage where all he can
do is lash out", "lashes out with hate-filled rants",
"You are enraged... beside yourself with anger. Unable to control
yourself", "obvious hatred", "You have a strong persecution complex",
"Holy cow! You lost it! You became enraged and increased your name
calling and accusations and insults. You just could not stop yourself -
you were out of control!", "This was too much for you. Wow. You just
completely lost it", "you just attack, attack, attack. ...
Wow... you really have lost it. I wish you the best!",
"threw a toddler tantrum", "cannot stop himself from posting outrageous
hate-filled attacks and insults and lies",
"clearly very frustrated", "you lash out with insults, attacks,
and your ever-present view of your persecution", "pretty much belittles

"put others down", "calm down", "amazingly bent out of shape",
"you are so filled with hatred and anger and the inescapable need to
call people names", "You are a very, very angry person!",
"so angry and out of control"

It's best to just ignore the snit troll and put him and his nyms in the
bit bucket. Replying to him is useless because he will turn every single
thread into a circus.
There is also a list of several hundred people who despise snit but the
link on cosmicpenguin seems to have gone dead.
Not that it really matters though because that list is outdated and the
number has probably climbed to over a thousand people by now.

Bin snit and never reply directly to him and you will see how these
groups are still interesting even though USENET is kind of a dying breed
at the moment.

Well, you definitely did the research. Wife did have a step wave
UPS,
and the iMac started doing some strange things, (like emptying trash
that doesn't empty the trash and hang). Got her a pure sine wave UPS
and those problems disappeared.

unrelated and a coincidence.

Not a coincidence if you know your electronics well enough.

i do, and it is very much a coincidence. stepped sine waves won't cause
the trash not to empty.

The UPS stepped output can cause harmonics that the iMac power supply
can't handle. I put a new UPS pure wave output and the problem went
away.

false. imacs have no issue with stepped sine waves, nor do other macs.

But not in my case. Is it a faulty ps in the iMac? Could be, but the
pure sine wave output is a much better options.

pure sine wave is better but it cannot cause the symptoms you describe.

So you say.
Again, your credentials?

unlike you, extensive knowledge about macs, pcs and upses.

it's not possible for a stepped sine wave to cause only one app to hang.

you have also contradicted yourself, so we know the story is bull****.

Whether you put much
trust in the GeekSquad or not, they did say that some iMacs are affected
by this.

geeksquad? seriously?

Seriously. Not all of them are incompetent,

almost all of them are incompetent and the ones that aren't will soon
find much better jobs elsewhere.

and so far their
explanations do make sense.

they don't.

the claim that some macs are affected is simply false.

So I went up to another store and asked the same question.
Funny that the store won't stock the cheap stepped UPS, but they do
stock the better ones.

that means nothing.

Not to you, but it does to me.

all it means is one store chooses to sell higher end products. higher
end products generally have higher profits. best buy and the geek squad
doesn't cater to that market.

it says absolutely nothing about what happens when a cheapo ups is used
with a mac or any other device.

some devices do have issues. macs are not among them.

you also shouldn't be running anything off a ups for an extended period
of time anyway. it's for brief amounts of time, to safely shut down.

The UPS has about 2 hours of power before I have to shut down the iMac.

higher end upses that last that long normally are pure sinewave.

Yes, that is why I don't use the el-cheapos.

the el-cheapos don't run that long.

that said, i've run several different macs, pcs, upses and many other
devices for 30+ minutes off a cheap ups (stepped sine) without issue.

But not her iMac. It is not fun to have a hanging process. You have
to, in this instance, bring up Activity Monitor and force quit Finder.
Which, in this case, also mandates a restart.

no it definitely doesn't require a restart, nor is activity monitor
needed to force quit finder.

Hah. Now I know you are a fraud and troll.

ad hominem.

learn something for a change.

there are numerous ways to force-quit any app on a mac, including
finder, which does not involve using activity monitor or needing a
restart.

some of the most common ways include -

choose force-quit from the apple menu (or press command-option-escape),
then choose finder:
https://i0.wp.com/www.techjunkie.com...015/02/force-q
uit-menu.jpg

shift-click the apple menu to force-quit the frontmost app, skipping
the above window:
http://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/u...quit-menu-shif
t-key.jpg

option + contextual-click the app's icon in the dock:
https://appletoolbox.com/wp-content/...nch-macOS-Find
er-via-Option-Key.jpg

in terminal, type:
killall Finder

that you think activity monitor is the only way to force-quit an app or
that a restart is required is clear proof you know next to nothing
about macs and makes *you* the fraud and troll.

Yep. On consumer products, there are a lot of short-cuts made to lower
the cost,

often but not always.

there is a significant demand for high quality, well made products that
do not cut corners to lower costs.

and on an iMac also size and weight.

false.

imacs are made out of milled aluminum, not cheap plastic, and the
internals are also not cheap either, with numerous custom parts.

microsoft surface laptops do something similar with the alcantara
keyboard, which adds to the cost, purely for aesthetic reasons.
