Obviously, the third CD has some issues. If it's simply dirty or slightly
scratched and cleaning it doesn't help, you may be able to recover it by
ripping an .iso image of it to your HD (on a separate computer) and

burning
a new CD. Try Nero or Undisker. I've had some successes when doing this
and some failures, based solely on how badly the CD was damaged. Bottom
line, once a CD becomes too badly scratched, you have to replace it.

one thing i just recalled...

http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/

may be able to get the data off the bad cd...
then it can be reburned

Sheesh....I even went back and looked. I'll learn to read some day.

hey...i do that often enough...
but i think my real question was how replacing the heat sink
could erase the harddrive???
that's a real mystery

He just said "in the process of replacement" which doesn't tell us anything.
I could say "in the process of installing an application my monitor broke."
What I didn't tell you was that I got mad and hit my monitor with a hammer.

In a later post he tells us what happened. After he re-attached the heatsink
he ran the Compaq Restore CDs which of course affected what was currently on
the drive.

Okay, I'll be the one the ask: How the hell do you "break" a
heatsink? If you hit it so hard with a very sharp axe to cleave it
into pieces, the rest of your laptop is also just as unusable. Since
it is a laptop, and since you are claiming so internal component that
is a chunk of metal with fins somehow "broke", you actually
dismantled your laptop to look inside? The dismantling is probably
what voided your warranty.

Vanguard - you trying to say that solid pieces of aluminum don't just
spontaneously fall apart? Say it ain't so!

Yep, my anvil just self-destructed yesterday. It just crumbled into
dust. Guess I didn't see the expiration date stamped on the bottom, but
then I can't read it now, anyway.

Not that it matters...4 years later, he probably isn't covered under a
warranty anyway.

I haven't touched Compaq boxes in maybe a decade, but I recall you could
buy service contracts that extended the warranty. Actually what you
ended up buying was some contracted service agent, like TRW, to do the
service after the Compaq warranty itself expired. Of course, all the OP
said is that Compaq refused to provide help with the intended inference
that Compaq was supposed to help him at all.

Yeah, they still do this, but I think the max is three years...and they
don't come on the cheap, either. They do seem to support well, though
(hardware, anyway). My laptop HD died after only a few weeks and they sent
a new one by next day FedEx.

That's still a bit odd , as replacing the heatsink should not have been any
reason
for doing a restore...unless maybe the machine crashed due to overheating
and corrupted the OS.

I'm no laptop expert
but I still assume he meant the cpu heatsink...
on the few laptops i;ve worked on the harddrive was well isolated from the
cpu

True enough but there is not much airspace inside a laptop and they heat up
surprisingly fast if all is not well..

The two posts suggest that the guy had it apart himself and who knows what
may have transpired.. the unit is four years old, as are the CDs and
drives..

The best done now is to clean the CD drive and CDs and just hope that it
loads.. I doubt if Compaq have replacement CDs for a unit that old..

Yea but they had 65 million to lure Fiona from Lucent....
