If the virus has caused sufficient damage, you may have to reinstall Windows. If not, you need to run an anti-virus program. Downloading is one way to get an anti-virus program, but some of them can be bought in stores. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

James wrote:
How can I get rid of a virus on a computer without taking it to the repair shop or downloading anything. The practical answer is "you can't". You need to get all tools and their updates from a different, known-clean machine. I don't advocate using on-line scanners since often a virus or malware will be active even during Safe Mode With Networking. Since you didn't give any details about the infection, all I can do is give you general removal steps. Again, you need to get what you need elsewhere and save the tools and their updates on a thumb drive or burn to CD-R. The infected machine should be taken off the Internet and disconnected from the Local Area Network if there is one. Go through these general malware removal steps systematically - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using Multi_AV in Vista. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions http://tinyurl.com/yoeru3 - download link and more instructions You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your malware he Bleeping Computer removal how-to's - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html Or he Malwarebytes malware removal guides - http://tinyurl.com/5xrpft When all else fails, get guided help. How Can I Get Rid of a Virus
Well my friend I wish I had better news for you in regards to your question but I do not. However I will provide you two options that fit your criteria: 1. You can go to www.symantec.com and for a fee based service they will scan your entire computer for viruses and remove them or 2. call Microsft at 800-microsoft and ask for technical support and tell them you have a virus and they will direct you to the security team of tech support. They will charge you about $60 dollars. Both these options require no downloading and no taking it in to a shop but cost money. You may want to get a quote from a technician to see if you can get virus removal cheaper. Depending on what virus you have you may need to reinstall Windows which is a major pain in the ass, but might be neccessary. In that case a technician is probably your best option. I hope this has been helpful. If you want to know how to dispose of the virus yourself respond and I will see what I can do for you but it would require downloading of programs. James Well, they don't have magic "computer repair shop" anti-virus light sabres :-) They just do the same stuff as earlier detailed. What exactly is the problem you are trying to solve, and in what ways has it not been addressed by earlier responses to your original question? |

How Can I Get Rid of a Virus
First I have a question for you. Why do you think you have a virus? Perhaps
you do not? What behavior is your computer showing that makes you believe you have a virus and when did this behavior start? Did you install or unistall any programs? Did you delete any files? You could have spyware and or malware or you may need to do some maintenance on your computer. If you want I can walk you through the maintenance steps for Windows XP but it may not solve your problem if you truly have a virus; however if you dont have a virus and your computer has slowed down considerably this may help. As far as virus removal I really think your best option is to pay a technican so they can do a virus removal thoroughly whether it be to take it to a shop or have a tech come to your home. I only know a little about virus removal. It can be difficult for certain reasons and complicated. You need to know what kind of virus you have and how deep the infection is. Viruses hide in deep files the registry and hidden files and subfolders you cant see or access on your computer, hence complete removal takes a good deal of technical experstise. If a reinstallation of Windows is needed then that is way beyond my expertise and you would be wise to fork out money to have it done. I hope this has been helpful. Get back to me and answer my questions we will go from there.
