Default HELP: Using Chinese in WinXP

I have some problems setting up the Language Bar Input to work properly. I
installed the Language Bar, Chinese (PRC) , MS Pingyin IME and opened up
Notepad to test the inputting of Chinese characters.

However, when I clicked Chinese input and typed in Pingyin eg "ma", nothing
appears on the Character Candidate Bar. Normally, one would see many
characters displayed for selection. Next, I pressed the Space Bar , and
the Character ? drops into Notepad.

Can you advise. I use Windows XP Service Pack 2, with AMD Athlon Dual
Core Processor 4200, 2gb RAM, 320g HD.

Many thanks
