Default XP does not see printer automatically

I have a HP G85Xi Office jet both at home and at work. Both of my computers
use XP both home and professional. Both Computers I have a problem that if I
shut the printer off, and turn it back on, I can not print. I will have to
restart the computer to see the printer once again.

Same thing at the office, I have 2 computers hooked up to the G85xi printer
via and A/B switch. If I move the switch to the other computer to print, then
try to move it back to my computer I have to restart to get my computer to
see the printer. The other computer doesn't have to restart to see the
printer because it's running Windows 2000 Pro

Any ideas why XP never sees the printer without needing to restart?
