Default Locked out of windows 8.1

I can't get into a W8.1 laptop as owner cannot recall password.
Microsoft no help as he cannot supply enough information to them. (last
emails etc) Is there a simple way round this, or a freeware program to
download to another computer. Laptop does not have any reset discs or CD
drive.

Utilman hack.

http://reboot.pro/topic/17872-reset-...arty-software/

"The Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, for example, is a tiny,
Linux-based tool that can blank a password in fewer steps and much less time.
"

http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

So that's a couple ideas.

Note that when you find ideas like this, they could be
invalidated at any time. For example, the transition
to Windows 8.1 might have blocked one of these methods,
so you cannot assume any crusty old web page is
always accurate and up-to-date.

[ Always back up the hard drive contents, before
trying anything really nasty. Just in case one of
your experiments goes wrong. I would probably
do a backup before attempting to flatten a password,
as I've never done it before, and lack the experience. ]

*******

On a business laptop, you can use a BIOS password to
protect the computer. Unlike a consumer laptop, where
removing the CMOS CR2032 and the main battery pack,
causes the BIOS password to be cleared, a business
laptop uses a 2KB EEPROM to store the password.
And cheesy defeat methods don't work. You need to
contact the factory to have those reset. There is a
guy in Eastern Europe who made a "lead chip" for the
EEPROM, and provides instructs for defeating that
password, but he's disappeared.

Since the Windows password is so easy to flatten,
a business user might use the laptop BIOS password
as a second line of defense.

*******

For Windows passwords, the general principle is that
it is easy to "flatten" the password. Say you had a
teenage son, and wanted to enter his computing device
in a clandestine manner. Flattening the password is
easy - but now the problem is, the next time your
son tries to log in, the password is wrong. And
he's locked out. He might suspect something...

Password "cracking" is a different subject. At one
time, you could use "rainbow tables", and various
people would provide means for brute-forcing
passwords. So that's another avenue, if you wish
to preserve the current owners password, and break
into their computer as desired. Of course, the
"last accessed" file system feature, could show
the victim they're being observed.

Good luck,
Paul

While I can not help you with the password recovery problem, I can tell
you what I did to prevent the loss of the password.

First I am the principal user of the computer and my wife occasionally
uses it. Using a Notepad I created a documents with my name, address,
etc, and my password.

I then did a screen print, and cropped the image to just above
information. I then saved it as a jpg.

In PC Settings, Accounts I changed the picture on the opening page to
the above JPG. Now the first screen that shows when the password is
requested is my contact information and the password to access the
computer. This is also my Microsoft account password, which I never use
and if it were not there would be forgotten.

This obviously would not work if a person were a security fanatic, or
the computer was used with multiple accounts.

So why have a password at all?

Because I had to create one when I installed Windows 8.1

In the years since 8.0 was released, there have been many articles on
how to install it without creating the Microsoft account and working
around it.

However when I got this computer my Windows XP machine died, and I was
trying to get a new computer up and working. Since I am the only one
useing the computer and had never used a password on XP, puting the
password on the login screen was the only quick solution that I could
think of so the password did not get lost.

Subsequently I have learned how to set the computer up so it does not
need a password, but the Microsoft password was still there.

Uh huh. Like we know it is your/their laptop rather than you/he hacking
into it. Microsoft decided you/he did not have proof of ownership and
obviously you provide even less (none) here. Search online on how to
hack into Windows. There are lots of articles on how to do it.

Read the manual. It will say what key to hit on boot to do a
factory-time image restore. If you/he blew away the restore partition
then use the rescue CDs the manual told you to create. If you don't
have either then buy new installation media. Start from scratch. It
will take longer to reinstall all the apps.

If you/he did not perform backups then you/he deemed your/his data files
as trivial or reproducible.

Thanks, but it is extremely easy to bypass the log in requirement.

Thanks for replies. It is a friend's computer with no discs - no back
ups - can't remember passwords etc etc; the usual story. After receiving
microsoft reply of insufficient information I tried again with same info
and - hey presto, they sent an unlock code. So removed the requirement
for password at login and won't have that problem again - at least not
with this dude.

This process apparently requires a valid password (presumably of an
admin account you need to log into) so not so useful in your case?

This is a topic that comes here time after time and there are many ways
to get into a system where you don't have a valid password. Linux Live
CD can do it for you but if you are new to Linux then try the Windows
Bootable disk as shown in this Video:

https://youtu.be/qIOIe0nr6DQ

These tricks works and I have used them many times and recently I had to
hack into a system of a woman who was going through the divorce
proceedings but she was hiding details of her bank accounts and
investment portfolios. I managed to hack into her system (because her
then husband had access to the machine) and we got hold of all her bank
accounts, password file and copies of other documents and produced them
in the court and guess what - she cried foul!!! The judge said it makes
no difference in a civil case how the info is obtained as long as it is
factual. Husband got what he wanted and we had a wonderful party after
that!!

Good luck.
