Default Sometimes It Starts... SOMETIMES NOT

I have a system that's about 2yrs old, no more than 3. It's running a celeron
1.7 and has 128megs of RAM. It's gotten to the point that sometimes it starts
up when you hit the power button and other times it doesn't. When it's
plugged up after it's been unplugged for a while, it sounds like the HD is
making a clicking sound. At the same time it lights up like it's about to
power up by itself and after the clicking stops the lights go out as well and
when the power button is hit to start it up it does nothing. I was told that
also, sometimes when you try to boot it up, the message shows up on the
screen that it can't find the operating system. Other times it starts up
without the error message showing up. OH yeh, it's an Emachine.

Anyone out there have any suggestions on what needs to be done to get this
box working correctly? Any and All input is very welcome.

You have serious hardware problems (motherboard, power supply, hard disk,
maybe all three.) You will find it more cost efective to buy a new computer.

XP really needs more than 128mb's of RAM.. Have you tried replacing the CMOS
battery..?
Did the E-machine originally come with XP or ME..? What is the model #..?
Depending on it's memory constraints, it may not be worth the effort to run
XP on it, ie.. It may only be suited for windows ME.. You do have the
original setup disks, right..? If you had to replace the hard drive you would
need the original setup disks.. A new PSU would need to conform to the space
available or a new case would be needed too.. So, it might just be cheaper to
get a new E-machine..

Hey Ted, I took another listen to it and found that it was the floppy drive
making the noise. So for the -process of elimination- heck of it, I replaced
the power supply with another that I know works perfectly fine. After hooking
it up and trying to power it up I got absolutely nothing. I placed it back
into my working pc and it worked fine. So does that say that I DeFiNiTeLy
have motherboard issues? not saying that's the only issue going on here
Would that be a fair assessment or does it take more than that to come to
that conclusion?

In your case, it takes a technician examining the computer to determine
what's damaged.

Software is easy to fix: You can always reinstall and be back in business.
Hardware isn't the same way. Unless it's pretty obvious - and from your
description, it's not - a technician has to see the machine to diagnose the
problem.

Just finished talking to my psychic adviser. She sees a new computer in your
future.
