USB Connected Printer Is Suddenly Not Seen by XP

This printer worked fine through the end of March and then
suddenly when booting the laptop I use, the found new
hardwre message appeared and the LEXMARK 1000 driver was
automatically reinstalled and lo and behold an error
message dialogue appeared with hardware installation
terminated due to rpc and the add prnter wizard does not
function. The error is an rpc and activating print
spooler does nothing to solve this problem.
