Default Tip: Heads up on M$ Office

Hi All,

Office 2019 now only runs on Windows 10.

And those inglorious ass holes at M$ have discontinued any support/sales
for Office 2016.

Work arounds

1) install sh*tty Windows 10

2) install the freaking Office 365 lease license

3) get a volume license with downgrade rights

4) install buggy Libre Office (get a good set of ear plug
for when the customer yells "I DON'T WANT TO LEARN
ANYTHING NEW!!!").

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely no need to do that.

No need for that, either

incorrect. There are numerous alternatives to MS Office and LibreOffice.
Examples:

https://www.apple.com/iwork/
https://www.google.com/docs/about/
https://www.openoffice.org

further examples are detectable using the search engine of your choice.

I just spent two hours on the phone with everyone at M$. Office 2019 is
only supported on Windows 10. THEY WON'T
BUDGE and THEY WON'T EXCHANGE IT. They are ass holes.

2019's installer is adamant about you upgrading to Windows
Nein, oops, Windows Ten.

Whatever you did, I'd love to know! I have a 2019
license that refused to install on a customer's Windows 7.
Maybe you should recheck your version number?

If yours really does run in 7, where did you get your ISO/IMG?

2) install the freaking Office 365 lease license

Absolutely no need to do that.

I do not care at all for 365. A leased license
that spies on you???

3) get a volume license with downgrade rights

No need for that, either

That is the only other way according to M$. And
they will not exchange me.

Ya. You feel like converting them over? They are
awash with specialty software that requires Windows.

Oh, when I was redeem the key, I noticed that they
included the Linux logo along with the ones you
mentioned. Wine, I presume.

Windows XP mainstream support ended way back in 2014.
Windows 7 mainstream support ended January 13, 2015.
Windows 8 mainstream support ended January 10, 2018.

So, on what OS platform of Microsoft's would they support the release of
a new product version? Obviously they're going to claim support only
for those OS versions still supported at the time of a product's
release. Office 2019 was released September 24, 2018. That was after
mainstream support ended for all Windows versions prior to 10.

That a prior Windows version is not supported by a product doesn't mean
it won't run under a prior Windows version, only that the product is not
*supported* to run under those prior Windows versions.

Even you should know the difference between "supported" and "works".
There could be dependencies. If Office 2019 requires some runtime or
library support only available in Windows 10, the product will likely
fail on prior versions of Windows.

And those inglorious ass holes at M$ have discontinued any
support/sales for Office 2016.

Odd Microsoft should end sales of a product that has not yet been
End-Of-Life'd. Office 2016 mainstream support doesn't end until October
13, 2010.

Why spend money to buy Office 2016 standalone ($229) when you can buy
Office 2019 standalone ($250)? Seems a waste of money to buy an old
version when you can already buy the later version.

If you (they) had purchased Office 365 subscriptionware, and were using
the Office 2016 components, those got updated with the Office 2019
features before Office 2019 was available as a separate product. The
idea of the subscription is you are updated to the latest features
without having to wait until the release of the next major version. I
would often seen popups notifying me about newly added features to
Office 365 (which started with the Office 2016 version) that would
eventually show up in the 2019 product, but was getting those features
long before 2019 got released.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office_2019
"Some features that had previously been restricted to Office 365
subscribers are available in this release."

At Microsoft's pricing of $99/year for Office 365 subscriptionware,
you'd spend about $600 for Office's average 6-year development cycle
(which they've reduced to 3 years, so $300). That's more expensive than
the standalone $250; however, I got support during the entire Office 365
subscription, not just until 60 days elapsed for the standalone version.
Other perks was a free 1 TB OneDrive quota handy for saving data file
backups, and a 60-minute per month Skype quota for connecting to
landlines and cell phones (Skype-to-Skype is always free, but I wanted a
backup VOIP service on my smartphone to the free Google Voice and my
ISP's VOIP service). There might be other perks, but support, 1TB at
OneDrive, and SkypeOut minutes were the ones that I remember.

...
4) install buggy Libre Office (get a good set of ear plug for when the
customer yells "I DON'T WANT TO LEARN ANYTHING NEW!!!").

Users could also complain about not continuing to use Wordstar or . If
they want to stick with old versions of software, they should also be
sticking with old versions of the OS under which those ancient programs
were supported. Why are they moving to Windows 10 if they want to keep
using old software that worked just fine under prior Windows versions?
Yeah, stupidity. Move to a new version of the OS but not for the
programs to run under the new OS. Buy a new car, but keep using the
bald tires from the prior car and get some "old car" scent spray.

You sure the problem is LibreOffice being buggy (more so than Office,
any version) versus a new learning curve to find all the equivalent
features in LibreOffice that users knew how to dig around to find in
Office? Sounds like "buggy" is a lame excuse for laziness to learn.

How old are these customers of yours? Old farts tend to get slow and
stubborn to learn. I know by watching everyone else my age. I'm old
but grew up using various computers, operating systems, and programs and
got used to change, plus I actually read the manual (if available) or
read books, review the config settings, and test the program to know
about 90% of it within a week versus taking several weeks to learn it
piecemeal as I encountered the need for another feature or function.
You don't become proficient in a program just by using it as minimally
needed. My age-peers are getting slow and lazy. I'm used to change.

Your users are lazy. What else is new? This is news to you? They go
home to waste time watch game shows, The Wives of somewhereElse, or
some other mind numbing entertainment. They don't want learning a new
program to get in the way of their inane entertainment. They don't want
to work some more when they go home or by staying after work. Lazy, and
with no real excuse.

If they are locked into Microsoft Office (their choice, not a
requirement), why aren't they also locked into an OS on which they've
locked into old versions of software?

Do these same users also try to play CDs on an LP player? You don't
change the OS unless demanded by critical software required for your
business. Usually it's the other way around: you have critical and old
software that demands you stay on an old version of the OS.

1) they are cheap (most customers are).

2) they hate Windows 10 (I have only come across
one customer who likes it)

Not a valid argument.

Windows 7 is a perfectly functional operating system.
Office 2019 will not install on it for one reason and
one reason only: M$ are ass holes. M$ is trying to
force folk on to Nein so they can sell their telemetry.

Then explain to them the consequences of their intransigence. If they
insist on using only Microsoft Office then they either pay Microsoft in
perpetuity for Office 365 or install Windows 10 so they can run Office
2019. Those are their choices. That's what technology lock-in is all
about.

I have little or no sympathy for people who want to use this technology
without bothering to understand any of it. (I've worked with people
who have used PCs for decades and still don't know what a file or
directory is and cannot even tell me where the file they lost was
located or what its name was.)

Don't jump to conclusions.

I have never owned M$O. I use Word Pro and LO.
I frequently pound LO for not fixing bugs. They
let sh*t ride for years and years.

The last two arguments that I won with them here
not saving a cell in Cals when the cell was still
active and you saved the file. The jerk that took
the original bug report, insisted it was not a bug.
I kept at him until he finally escalated it and
it got fixed. The other one was trying to set portrait
and landscape mixed in document. That one went round
and round and around. NOT A BUG. Your DAMNED Tookin'
its a bug, etc.. He got over ruled too. But its
took about 30 posts. They really, really do not want
to fix things, unless they are forced to

Stuff they leave in fixed are things like reverting
merged cells in Writer tables and the inability to
properly delete data from a writer table that had
merged cells in it.

AND there is always the ubiquitous sh*tty way the
do envelopes that won't print properly on my printer.
(I use Word Pro for envelopes.)

I can't disagree with your there. The thing is, if they

since they put food on my table, they are to be cherished.

M$ is playing hard ball trying to get their telemetry
they can sell. I explain to them that XP and 7 are
perfectly fine operating systems. M$ is doing their
damnedest to get them off of them and it is only going
to get more painful with time.

Office 365 and Office 2019 are indeed valid choices, but if they're running

Office 2016
Office 2013
Office 2010
Office 2007
