Default MS Excel Problem

My Excel 2003 (11.5612.5606) seemingly has gone South.
I only use it to track household expenses, but I have enjoyed it.
Now, however, I cannot enter dollar figures in the cells.
Every time I enter a number, and tab to the next cell, it immediately
exits, failing to save anything I entered.

Interestingly, I can execute the same .xls file to Excel on my other
W10 PC, and it works just fine.

I need help. Sorry if OT.
Sam

Calling it OT might be nit-picking, but since you're running it on Win10, I
wouldn't think it is. But that's just my HAWO :-)

Have you tried doing a repair of Excel? Go to Control PanelPrograms and
Features, scroll down to either MS Excel or MS Office (however it was
installed in the first place), highlight it and click on Repair from the
Uninstall/Change/Repair selections at the top of the program list. I am also
running MS Office 2003, and have seen Excel and Outlook get broken after a
MS Update. Repair has always worked for me (so far, knock on wood).

This is Microsoft's way of telling you to upgrade to a later version
because they no longer wish to support old software. I have the same
issue with Corel Video Studio X6 from 2012 or so. I can't properly
install it and even with workarounds, the software crashes when
anything is done. Microsoft has no interest in supporting older
software at all and feel that charging you about $7 a month (in
Canada) to constantly have the latest version of their Office suite is
a fair compromise. This is where the strength of open-source software
is highlighted as it is constantly free whether to download or to
update. Chances are that free software like LibreOffice will load
your .XLS files properly and do the same task without any issue if you
choose to try it out.

Interestingly, I can execute the same .xls file to Excel on my other
W10 PC, and it works just fine.

If the other PC also has Excel 2003 on it and it loads fine, I would
suggest that a registry issue might be the cause. If you used a
registry cleaner on one PC and not the other, that "cleaner" might
have removed entries necessary to ensure stability. I've stopped using
registry cleaner for that exact reason.

I actually uninstalled word/excel, and completely reinstalled same.
Twice. Same result.

Please refrain from making this type of post. We have a very sensitive
contributor going by the name of GoodGuy, who gets very upset if anyone
offers a criticism of any version of Windows. This will generally cause
him to reply with an insult and refer you to Linux. Linux, I suppose can
break after an update although I haven't seen one in over three years.
Linux also shuts down and boots up as expected, so no getting a coffee
while it installs updates. It also is very polite and only upgrades the
items you check at your convenience and rarely if ever requires a re-
boot, although this behavior might be distribution dependent.
Of course you can fix the op's problem by an upgrade, then you will get
to figure out the stupid ribbon stuff cluttering up the top of the page.

Not true. Excel 2016 runs just fine under 64-bit Windows 10 1803 here.

Well, I'll be 88 this month so no bragging about that, and yes, I've used
all of those but not Mandarin, Cockney used to be my preferred language,
but after I moved to the States it turns out nobody really cared what I
spoke (and maybe what I write for all I know)..

Calling it OT might be nit-picking, but since you're running it on Win10, I
wouldn't think it is. But that's just my HAWO :-)

If you type "reliability" into Cortana, the Reliability Monitor
page will appear. And entries with a "red X" will indicate application
crashes.

That uses uses Werfault reports.

https://s15.postimg.cc/ggf8u9p2j/werfault.gif

The folder in each crash, contains "Report.wer", which is a text file.
Copy it some place you can work, and change the extension if you want.

The problem with the report, is the error summary is "terse"
and may not contain enough descriptive terms to Google and
find some breadcrumbs. For example, I know I dereferenced a
null pointer, but the Report.wer shows a C0000005 access violation
(because I tried to read memory location zero). I would have
to be pretty lucky to associate C0000005 with "oops, I dereferences
a null pointer".

The advantage of the reliability monitor, is it doesn't involve
much work. A lazy guy could do that much :-)

*******

Since your user name is "Sam Spade", you probably
want more details.

If you want a dump file, you're going to have to work for it.

You'll need to do some regedits.

https://s15.postimg.cc/fxa5l8xqj/localdumps_regedit.gif

It turns out my dumpchk to read the dump file, came from WSDK.
I probably edited the name of the ISO file a bit. A newer
version is available.

15063.137.170329-1903.rs2_release_svc_WindowsSDK__Win10SDK.iso

There are some details here on installing "Debug Tools" for your
Windows 10.

https://superuser.com/questions/1198...net-connection

# (the download link, possibly a slightly later version)

https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=845299

You can right-click the resulting ISO file download, and
select the "Mount" option to make it into a virtual CD
drive. Running the setup off it, you can tick the
"Debugging Tools" tick box, and maybe 150MB of
stuff will be added to your C: drive.

In there, you'll find a 32 bit and a 64 bit version
of "dumpchk.exe". You can copy these over to the
C:\DMP as "dumpchk32.exe" and "dumpchk64.exe" if
you want, to keep the two versions separate.

Then, in a regular command prompt window, you can do:

cd /d C:\DMP

dumpchk32.exe some.dmp === substitute real name of .dmp file

To collect the output in a text file, try this next:

dumpchk32.exe some.dmp output.txt

and you can open the output.txt in Notepad if you want.

*******

This doesn't mean the debugging job is easy, but
you might get lucky and find a breadcrumb in there
to work with.

If you need to share a large text file, you can
always try pastebin.

http://pastebin.com/

Paul
