Default What drivers do I need for XP installed in older pc?

Hi,

I am trying to install XP in an old Dan Pentium 2 computer, and I would like
to know what kind of drivers would it be likely that I would need?

Does anybody know what kind of drivers most likely I would need? I am
wondering if it would need different drivers than what came with Windows
98SE.

I have got drivers for the modem, would all the other drivers that would be
required come within xp does anybody know?

Joe;
You need to check with each specific hardware manufacturer about Windows XP
compatibility and drivers.

This link can be a big help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...g/default.mspx
Especially #3 Upgrade Advisor.

Hi Jupiter

I'm only talking about the actual computer, what kind of hardware are you
talking about? The only hardware is the hardware which came with the actual
Dan computer, nothing has been added accept one new CD Writer.
Thanks

Video will need a driver as will sound, NIC, modem and anything else such as
motherboard chipset etc.
The drivers for these may or may not be included with Windows XP.
The Windows 98 drivers most likely will not work with Windows XP.

Run the Upgrade Advisor to help.

Oh! Your talking about such hardware as the "internal guts" of my machine.
Do you seriously think that they might need drivers? They are automatically
included in windows 98SE would windows XP not have them in it, when it is
made for running on that kind of machine. (even though its old)
What are the chances that windows won't have the device drivers for the
"internal hardware" of the machine type with the specs that it is able to
run on?

Basically will the Upgrade Advisor scan my computer and automatically tell
me what drivers are needed do you know?

Thanks Again Jupiter

Drivers for devices as listed in Device Manager. Sorry I don't have access
to your computer so can't give you the exact details. Maybe you would like
to look in device manager then do a search of manufacture websites to see if
XP drivers are available.

Even if XP does correctly identify and install drivers for all your devices
then it is still recommended to install updated drivers from the
manufacturer's website.

On a separate note. What is the font you use on your website Jupiter, it
looks nice. I might like to use that font myself.

I can appreciate that, but my difficulty is that I will not know what
devices need drivers in the first place.

Ok Thanks.

So I'll look under the "Device Manager" area for devices, and presumably all
devices will be needing drivers.

Joe;
All hardware will need drivers.
Do not assume Windows 98 compatible hardware is automatically supported in
Windows XP.
Many have made that assumption and then found out they needed newer
hardware.
That is why you need to check for the current Windows XP drivers.
It would not be unusual if some component does not have Windows XP drivers.

The Upgrade Advisor will tell you what hardware would have problems with
Windows XP.
From there research to see if Windows XP drivers are even available.
You can download Upgrade Advisor on a computer with high speed internet
access then burn to CD for use on your computer.

Oh well I kind of did think this. Everybody on the other thread said they
would prefer to install XP, nobody warned me there might be
other hastles.

I don't have fast net connection and nor do I have access to it. How can I
tell if my hardware needs updated drivers without using the update manager
program that is 50mgs and too big for me to download? Do you know?

Or do I just have to wait and see if something goes wrong, which sounds a
bit "Heath Robinson" if your a Brit you'll know what that means.

From there research to see if Windows XP drivers are even available.

Joe;
Do you have a friend that has a retail windows XP CD?
If so, from the Desktop, insert the CD.
There will be a few options that come up, choose the one that checks for
compatibility.

Otherwise you may need to contact the manufacturer of each component.
The computer manufacturer may be all you need to contact.

Since I can't see inside your PC's case from here, and since you've
failed to list the specific components (to include make/model) of your
PC, we can answer only in the most general terms. You need the specific
WinXP-compatible drivers provided by the manufacturers of all of the
computer's components. These could include, but are not limited to:

Motherboard Chipset drivers
Video drivers
Sound Card drivers
Network Adapter Driver
IDE drivers
Modem drivers, which you say you already have
Mouse drivers, if you've a non-standard mouse
USB bus drivers
