Default DirectX 9.0c fails Direct 3d Test

I just purchased a new video card. It is the Nvidea 6800Gt. I tried
playing a couple games but each one crashed a few minutes in. I passed all
test running DirectX Diagnostics except for Direct3D.
I get this message every time:
No problems found.
To test DirectDraw functionality, click the "Test DirectDraw" button above.
Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D
rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)
Direct3D 8 test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 9 test results: All tests were successful.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Did you uninstall the old video card driver first then installed the new
video card drivers ?

An interesting question & one I've never considered before.
I'll be very interested in the feedback on this one.

Yes I did. I even installed a program called "Driver Cleaner Pro"
specifically for removing left over nvidia drivers. I ran it in safe
mode like the instructions say where it found quite a few lingering
files. I then reinstalled the drivers when windows started with the same
bad results.

Download DX9c again and install it - Worth a try.

It doesn't seem to install when I do that. I already tried and as soon
as I click on the setup program to install I get the all files installed
message. It has to be less than 1 second between start and finish. I
downloaded DirectX and the redistribution package. Both with the same
results.

Look in Device Manager Add/Remove programs and uninstall Microsoft Directx
then reboot and try installing it again.

Sorry it isn't there. I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed. I
should have mentioned that earlier. I actually did get to fix my problem
however by uninstalling the Nvidia drivers and reinstalling an old set.
But the problem still exists. It seems as though all of my newer games
that I installed such and C&C Generals, Halo, and FarCry all freeze
intermintently. Old games though like Max Payne and Homeworld have no
problems.
