Not Installing SP3, so this question...
Because my Windows SP2 will undoubtedly run pretty good until Windows 7 is
out and tested by the public, and because it's time to get ready to rebuild my computer I won't be installing SP3. However, last August, Windows Update had downloaded, but not installed (my call) SP3. I knew I wasn't ready for it. So I have 569 MB of SP3 in the Software Distribution download folder taking up space. Can I just delete it from the download folder? It is at this address: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\cf8ec753e 88561d2ddb53e183dc05c3e Since it's so large, should I do it all at once, or open its folder and delete the files in four or five parts? |

Not Installing SP3, so this question...
SP3, although is referred to a Service Update, is a complete installation
of XP and "upgrades" the current installation to a "newer version" - regarding "... I knew I wasn't ready for it...." doesn't "compute".? |

Actually, it does compute if you read my other problem "AMD Processor and SP3" by 5tulips 3/14/2009 11:13 PM I have made my decision about that. I have done enough reading and know my system well enough that I'm not about to install SP3. Now I have asked a different question about deleting the download folder containing SP3. I have rewritten that new question below. Sorry if I didn't give enough information. -- 5tulips 5tulips has rewritten the question AJR deleted: ..... Erase whatever you want on your own computer. ;-) That directory is safe to erase - although if you have not turned off automatic updates... It's not a lot of space. But delete the whole folder/subfolder if you want. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

Yes, I turned off automatic updates shortly after I got that download (I
had set it for download, but don't install) and later just stopped the automatic updates altogether. I just go to windows updates the middle of every month and am good to go. Then I can get what I want/need. Thanks for giving me assurance to delete that folder. You say it is not large, Shenan - but it *is* half a GB. I can really use that kind of space. Again, thanks. -- 5tulips "Shenan Stanley" wrote in message ... : 5tulips wrote: : Because my Windows SP2 will undoubtedly run pretty good until : Windows 7 is out and tested by the public, and because it's time to : get ready to rebuild my computer I won't be installing SP3. : : However, last August, Windows Update had downloaded, but not : installed (my call) SP3. Why ever not? Windows 7 won't be out for a good while and SP3 contains some major security updates. It's for the benefit of the WHOLE computing community that these security updates are released - do you not think it a bit selfish to have an unsecure computer? -- Asking a question? I'm cautious about updates because of the amount of specialist software we
run, some of which is very sensitive to system-changes. Nevertheless I've not found any problems so far with SP3, in most cases it improves performance slightly. Check for Trojans and viruses before installing, and stop all background processes like messengers, screensavers, etc. Key point here is to ensure you won't suffer any glitch or interruption of the upgrade process once started, as that would almost certainly leave you with an ubootable computer.
