Adding Windows Component???

I want to add a Windows Component (Fax Services) to my existing Windows OS
that is installed on my computer. I went to Add/Remove Programs, selected
Add/Remove Windows Components and a Windows Component Wizard displayed. Most
of the Windows components have a check mark in front of them but Fax Service
does not.

My question is: Do I LEAVE the checkmarks in front of the Windows
components I want to keep and put a checkmark in front of Fax Services or do
I UNCHECK all the other services that are already on my computer and just put
a checkmark in front of Fax Services.

The reason I'm asking is that I recall doing this some years ago and if I'm
not mistaken I unchecked all the blocks except the one I wanted to add and I
think all the UNCHECKED Windows components were UNISTALLED!

Please instruct me on the correct way of ADDING a Windows component without
accidentally UNINSTALLING the others.

Thank you very much Mike, for the very quick reply. You may have saved me
from making a big mistake. Boy am I glad I asked this question and that I
remembered that bad experience from the past. In two internet articles I
found on this subject that were written by "Experts". Neither one of them
mention anything about NOT unchecking the items you want to keep. They only
say to put a checkmark in front of the item you want to install. It's
confusing because by leaving the checkmarks on the other items one might
assume that they will try to reinstall over existing programs (some of which
have been updated since the original Windows install CD).

Thanks again very much! PS: Is anyone aware of a free/inexpensive Fax
program for Windows Vista? (Since MS decided not to include it in Win Vista
Home Premium). That's the reason I'm trying to update my old XP machine. At
least it has faxing capability.

If your Vista machine has enough memory, you could install Microsoft's free
virtual machine (I think it is called Virtual PC) software and install WXP
and its Faxing capabities in that virtual machine.

If you want fax in Vista Home Premium, Snappy fax may be an answer..

Way less problematic than setting up XP in a virtual machine..

Keep it simple is generally the best way..

Thank you for the repies all. Got it installed, sent a test fax and it
worked fine. As for my Vista machine, I'm considering SnappyFax. I've read
a number of posts where people recommend it for Vista. I'm also considering
dual booting to XP (for other reasons then just the Fax option).
