Default Is releasing Vista with with a free upgrade to Win7 screwing people out of free Win 10?

I have two laptops that both say Vista on the key, but came with free
Win7 upgrades.

I am not sure I even want to upgrade to Win10, but my desktop with
Win7 has a Win10 upgrade icon.

One of the laptops is dead, but I have another one that doesn't
display Win10.

I bought a Vista with a Win7 upgrade and have the Win10 offer.

Devices originally with Vista upgraded to Win7 afiak qualify for the
free-for-first-year Win10 upgrade. It would be wise to ensure the Get
Windows 10 app readiness system status check does not show any conflicts.

Since I have a tablet now, my laptop never gets used. It is a Vista
to Win7 and it has nothing important on it. If anything it has more
useless crap than useful crap.

The laptop would be the perfect way to test drive Win10. I would much
rather just wipe it out and put on Win10. I guess there is no way to
do that and still have a legal copy of Windows. That would be too
easy.

It is not displaying a Win10 icon.

All I can provide is the suggestion to ensure that old Vista to Win7 is
at Win7 SP1 level and fully updated. Once done, install KB 303558. If
successful, reserve Win10 and see if the app reports it as 'Good to Go',
if issues are reported it might be time to put it to pasture.

In the same light, an old Vista era laptop is probably not worth much.
