Default Lost my Win XP mode in Win7

When I replaced my original laptop drive with the Samsung SSD the only
thing that disappeared during the drive cloning was the virtual XP mode.
So I downloaded the software and reinstalled it but when I also tried to
install the Microsoft Security Essential (MSE) software that was there
before, a message came up that because its support had stopped by MS, it
could not be even installed again. Without the virtual XP a msg pops up
a security warning whenever I start it up.

The only reason I need this XP mode is my old Umax Astra scanner which
has no drivers for later OS than XP. So I used to scan in XP mode.

Anybody knows how to get hold of an older version of MSE that will at
least install and updates up to the point when MS stopped supporting it?
I understand the still supported embedded system's MSE patches also work
on the home version of XP MSE. The light virus protection MSE provides
is sufficient for my purposes, so I don't want to load some other, fat
anti-virus package.

I replaced MSE with Avast Free about a year ago when MSFT made the
announcement about support ending. It's not "fat".

Not sure if this is going to work but have you tried to back-date the
system to April 8, 2014 (say 31st December, 2013) ? just a thought.

Also, in Windows 7 you can do something like this:

Compatibility Check http://s24.postimg.org/8mj89wkyd/2015_07_20_0405.png

Just a thought here. I prefer to use latest software as and when available.

I would try a different method of copying the original disk.

If it was my laptop, I would

1) Make a backup of the original disk, so no amount of experiments
result in permanently degraded usage. Store the backup on an external disk.

2) Modify internal disk contents so they "fit" within SSD if making
an exact copy. After making changes to the setup of the original
disk, boot and retest that WinXP Mode still works. Doing these
tests, is intended to help you discover how it is getting disabled.

+-----+----------+---------+
| MBR | C: OS | D: Data | Hard drive
+-----+----------+---------+

+-----+----------+
| MBR | C: OS | SSD (just enough room for C)
+-----+----------+

3) It might require resizing or moving stuff, to make an
image suitable for copying. You might need a Partition Manager.

4) Then, use dd or use Acronis sector-by-sector copying,
to copy a small enough *exact* copy of the modified original
hard drive, to the SSD.

I can't imagine why WinXP Mode would get disabled, on
a simple hard drive change out. So maybe some info is
stored in areas of the file system, which are not getting
cloned ?

Just leave it without MSE. Is there a problem for you with that like
that?

+1

if you use it just to scan, disable internet access and share just the scan
folder or, better, set the scan software to write on the host hdd (so you
don't have to share anything on the xp machine)
to feel even more safe, remove all IE icons from desktop and start menu and
change the configuration of *.html files from IE to notepad

I did clone the original disk and then reloaded it to the SSD. Both disk
are the same size, so there was no need to change partitions.
Anyway, it's too late to do anything about it.

I lost the XP but I was able to recreate it. However I could not install
the MSE anymore.

I decides to look at some older disk backups to see if I find an MSE
download
from prior years and luckily I found one from 2013. So I used that to
reinstall
MSE in the newly installed virtual XP and guess what? It installed
without a hitch. I was even able update the virus signature files up to
the latest one available from Microsoft. Now I just need to find out
where MS has the newer virus updates for the embedded systems that it
still supports and how to apply them manually to my MSE.

I also reinstalled my scanner software and that works fine, too.
I'm now happy as a clam.

Say you have the old hard drive still around.
The WinXP Mode OS should be in a file similar to "VirtualXP.vhd".
My copy of the WinXP Mode installer here (never used),
has a file 1,212,712,448 bytes in side. The file
grows as you use it.

The file can be examined by the 7ZIP program. It can
show you the files inside. Microsoft has a "vhdmount" utility
for WinXP, and on Win8, you can go to Disk Management and mount
one of those .vhd files like it was a virtual hard drive.
Using those mechanisms, you can get stuff out of there.

If the virtual partition is corrupted, you can
use virtual machine hosting software, plus a copy
of TestDisk or "disktype" to work on it. Even if a
partition cannot be mounted any more, sometimes
TestDisk will allow you to copy file off it.

It might even be possible, to attach the old .vhd file
in the same virtual machine, as the new WinXP Mode you've installed.
But to do that, you have to find the settings panel in
Windows Virtual PC. Which is more difficult than finding it
in VPC2007. Both software are similar, with Windows Virtual PC
having added support for graphical output via terminal server
(so WinXP Mode programs look like they're running native
in Windows 7). Once you have the old disk drive in there,
you would be able to see it in the Disk Management of
the virtual machine.

So there are some things you can do, if you need something
out of there.

That happened to me -- losing MSE, that is -- because Microsoft is no
longer supporting XP.

So I then tried Avira. It seemed too cumbersome and I thought it was
slowing down my computer, though that may have been bugs in Firefox's
"plugincontainer.exe". I then tried BitDefender, which seemed nice and
unobrusive, but expired after a month, so I went back to Avast, which
I had used before MSE, and it seems OK.
