Default Revo Uninstaller free version

I was about to download the free version of Revo Uninstaller onto my
64-bit Windows 7 computer, just to have in case I need it. I noticed,
however, the following at the website: "Revo Uninstaller Free is fully
compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7,
Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Server."

Does that mean it won't work on my 64-bit computer?

Revo can /only/ uninstall 32-bit programs.

Just curious. What 64-bit programs do you have installed?

GeekUninstaller

- Native X64 support
Single EXE runs flawlessly on both 32 and 64-bit Windows 7/8/XP/Vista.
When running on x64 Windows GeekUninstaller is running as a native
64-bit application.

- Portable
No need to install. Place single EXE file on your USB flash drive and
use it everywhere.

There's a portable version of Free Revo.

Revo Uninstaller Free (1.95) dates from July 04 2013.

GeekUninstaller is regularly updated,
see version history 1.3.3.46 [2 April 2015]

I just received this email from their tech support when I asked if the
free version was compatible with Windows 64.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us!

Revo Uninstaller Freeware currently doesn't have 64-bit support. It can
run on a 64-bit version of Windows but it will have limited
functionality, for example it will not detect any native 64-bit
applications.

An updated free version with full 64-bit support is in development. We
cannot give you specific release dates but we expect it to be ready for
launch within the next few months.

If you have any questions or problems related to Revo Uninstaller do not
hesitate to contact us again!
Thank you!

Best regards,"

So there you have it, direct from a company source.

Interesting. I got an offer for the Pro for only $14 and was thinking
of buying it. If the free supports x64 then I may hold off. What's
another few months.

There is not installable free version of Revo Installer that supports
64-bit Windows. Some users, including me, thought the portable
(non-installed) version does support 64-bit Windows. Upon reflection
and checking versions, I don't see how. The installed and portable
versions of Revo Uninstaller are *both* version 1.95. It's not like you
get a newer version with the portable version.

While it will run on 64-bit applications as a 32-bit program, it does
not read the registry correctly regarding how the registry is masked for
32-bit applications. While 32-bit apps can read the 64-bit section of
the registry, they have to be coded that way. When coded to for a
32-bit Windows, they will miss the 64-bit registry. The free version
1.95 is too old to support 64-bit Windows. It will handle 32-bit apps
installed in 64-bit Windows but it won't handle 64-bit apps installed in
64-bit Windows.

The current payware version is 3.1.4. So you're not only getting an
older version of Revo with the free version but you're getting a free
version that is 2 major versions old.

GeekUninstaller support 64-bit Windows.

The current free version is 1.95. The current payware version is 3.1.4.
Their free version is back two major versions. That probably means you
won't get version 2.x as a free version until they come out with 4.x.
"Soon" is relative is development. What you want for soon is not what
they will produce soon.

http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_...n_history.html

64-bit compatibility was added in version 2.0. Their changelog
(http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_...n_history.html)
does not go back to further versions. It is unlikely there was a
version after 1.95 but before 2.0 that included 64-bit support. That
would be a major change so would take a major version update to appear.
You'll have to wait until they release 2.x as their free version.

You will have to find out from Revo when they expect to release 4.x as
payware and thereafter release 2.x as freeware (if they follow their
past practice of releasing two major versions back for their freeware).
Unless they are soon to release 4.0, I doubt an updated free version
that supports 64-bit will show up in a few months. Look at their
changelog. It took them over 3 years to go from 2.x to 3.x, and after
over another 2 years they are still only one minor version later.

I have not seen an official announcement from Revo as to when they will
released version 4 (so they can then release version 2 as freeware).
After over 5 years since workstation editions of Windows (Vista since
WinXP64 was Windows Server 2003 crippled and in disguise) have shown up
with a 64-bit version, Revo is still distributing a freeware copy of an
old version without 64-bit registry support. They could simply release
version 2, their prior major version, as freeware but, no, they want to
give you 2 major versions back and really cripple that offering.
Version 3 came out in Feb 2013, so for over 2 years they could've
offered a freeware version with 64-bit support.

Revo chose to remain stagnant in providing a free version that supports
64-bit Windows, especially since they have an older version to offer as
freeware that does have 64-bit support. Most companies offer a freeware
version that is crippled as a lure to their payware version. This one
super cripples the freeware version. If they stick to their past
release schedule, it will be a year, or more, before you see a freeware
version that supports 64-bit Windows, and that's if they don't get
greedy by not offering a 64-bit free version for even longer. Seems
their real effect is to push users to existing 64-bit free solutions.
Like they're telling you, "Yeah, have this trinket, go away freeloader."

- Macrium Reflect
- Microsoft Game

- r2 StartupDelayer

You're not suggesting that everything in that directory is 64-bit?

As long as the installer observes that convention. I have at least one
program in "Program Files" that is a 32-bit application.

Thanks for the link.

What I couldn't see on the website (actually there doesn't seem to be an
FAQ at all), is: how good is it when there isn't an uninstaller or an
entry in add/remove programs (or similar in later versions of Windows)?
Such as, either very badly-written software (either through incompetence
or deliberate action), or software where the uninstaller has been run
but either interrupted (but got far enough to remove traces from
add/remove, and remove itself) or just didn't work properly?

Yes.

I had a dentist appointment in just 10 minutes so I didn't spend time to
review before submit. Was writing, WHOA, look at the time, submit, bye.

as a 32-bit program, it does not read the registry correctly
regarding how the registry is masked for 32-bit applications.

Revo says so.

It will handle 32-bit apps installed in 64-bit Windows but it won't
handle 64-bit apps installed in 64-bit Windows.

"Handle" as in "uninstall"?

That's what the product does. Revo free doesn't handle, recognize,
manage, or "whatever word is you prefer" the registry entries for the
64-bit programs. Registry cleanup is only part of an uninstall.
Deleting files is another part. Handling, as in managing, the registry
cleanup was the gist of my post.
