Default Memory Readings

Custom built computer, WinXP SP-2 new installation. Computer has 4 sticks 1GB
DDR2 memory. I ran a benchmark test and it showed a large diparity in
installed physical memory, and the memory windows utilized. 4096 to 3278 used
by Windows XP.
The memory shows in BIOS as 4gbs, and it also shows in the harware tools,
and advanced hardware tools as 4gbs. When I open the system properties box it
only shows at the lower figure. I have flashed the BIOS, and all memory
modules are working properly.

Any help, and/or input for a resolution to this problem would be appreciated.
Thank you,

You don't have a problem, only a misunderstanding of the memory address
usage.

Bob:

Thank you for answering my post. I still don't understand, I have taken the
2 sticks of 1gb memory back to the vendor, and exchanged them for two 512mb
sticks. I can still get the two 1gb memory sticks back, and installed in my
computer, but will it still read as 3296 under the computer properties tab?
The benchmark tests indicate a severe misuse of memory over 800mbs not being
used. Is there a work-around for this?

Thank you:

I believe its the way win handles memory, ie it only recognises or can use
3.2 approx
That is not meant to be a tech explanation
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...AE/PAEmem.mspx
This ammount of memory will only 'help' when running certain specific apps

There is an issue with Windows properly reporting memory over 3GB, as far as
I know it will know and use all 4GB but displays an amount which may vary
from system to system but is generally around #GB.

XP can address 4 GB memory space. Hardware you install uses memory
addresses too, that address space is then not available to use for RAM
addressing. There is where the difference is.

How much you have left? Ram and virtual memory to not get used up over the
life of a computer, you have the same amount as when it was new.
