Microsoft set to reveal the future for Windows 10 on October 26
Windows 10 is, it's fair to say, a bit of a divisive product. While it
hasn't alienated users to the same degree Windows 8.x did, it hasn't been universally embraced in the same way that Windows 7 was either. Part of the reason for that can be laid squarely at Microsoft's door -- the company's overly aggressive push to get people to upgrade meant a lot of users were put off before they'd even given the new OS a chance. Windows 10 is, unquestionably, a good operating system though, and recent changes in the Anniversary Update, and weekly Windows Insider... Even ordinary users are annoyed by that. OTOH, if all you want is The Big Four (TBF), plus one or two specialised programs, it works just fine. Friends'n'relations who've bought brand new machines in the last year or so have no complaints. (TBF: email, web surfing, writing, photo/video-viewing.) That's my 1.6 cents worth. :-0 +1 -- Best regards, Neil |

Anyway, what's the crieria? Without going into lengthy explanations: First and foremost, Stability and Security, Reliability, Efficiency, Configuriability, Consistency, Timely Support. These are not all my requirements, but are the major ones. Windows, any Windows -- some more than others, has never been able to fully satisfy those minimum criteria reliably. They are always breaking (or being broken) in one way or the other. I spent lots of time over the years fixing friends Windows systems. I should have started a side business. ;-) W10 doesn't crash. But neither did W7. It works. I leave my systems on for weeks at a time with nary a problem. And I tweak and trouble my systems all the time. Many are not so lucky, and have had nothing but problems. I've discovered those who've had the most are those whose systems were upgraded from a previous Windows, especially unknowingly. Seems those with the least problems are those who bought a new system with W10 preinstalled, and made few, if any, changes to it. Hope your good luck continues. Stef |

Seems those with the least problems are those who bought a new system with W10 preinstalled, and made few, if any, changes to it. Hope your good luck continues. Stef If you want a test case, install ImageMagick Q16 x64 on Win10 x64, load a very large image into it, and watch Win10 "freeze". So you can stop it. While I was testing that, I was power cycling the machine, something I *hate* to do. Because Task Manager didn't work, and I was out of options. The "workaround" is to set the preferences so the OpenMP library in ImageMagick, can only open one thread of execution. Then the program stops nicely with an "out of memory" error. But if the OpenMP library starts multiple threads requesting memory at the same time, Win10 has a **** right on the spot :-) If you think it's stable, you haven't tried enough test cases. And I wasn't trying on purpose to break it or anything. I was looking for a program to open a big file (might have been Photoshop "Big" format .psb), and that was one program on a list to try. By comparison, Irfanview behaved normally when used for the same purpose. (It either opens the file for viewing, or it declared an out of memory condition.) ******* On my Win10 Release install, file sharing is working fine today. On Win10 Insider 14942, file sharing is completely broken. Neither direction works. On 14936 file sharing was broken in one direction. Now it's completely toast. So yes, the Release version looks like "sweetness and light" today by comparison. You don't *ever* let users see this kind of brokenness. It's bad for business, and just the fact I'm writing this up and besmirching the reputation of the product, tells you why you don't "use the Internet as a replacement for the QA team". That's how you get a bad name for yourself. The idea of Insider test, is to test something that is stable enough, that the developers themselves would actually dogfood it. How could a developer use 14942 to get his/her job done ? They couldn't. They'd be cheating and using the Release version. Scumbags. My Logitech 9000Pro webcam still isn't working right on the Release version, but I suppose that will never be fixed. It used to work in 10586, fully functional. Paul |
