Is there a go-slow on providing Windows updates for Win 7?
Given that patch Tuesday was yesterday, I tried - yesterday evening and
today morning - to update Windows 7 (Pro) through the regular channel. After an hour-and-a half, nothing. Still "Checking for updates ... ". Have I missed something? Has MS declared a moratorium on Win 7 updates, because I have refused to 'upgrade'? |

It seems to be some devious way being used to get W7 users onto W10. It hasn't worked on me! There was some security update a few weeks ago for W7 but that's the last I've seen. You can use MBSA 2.3 if you want to check for security updates. MBSA runs in a variety of Windows OSes. Being a Baseline Security Analyzer, it checks for missing Security Updates, and does not consider the Optional ones at all. http://s12.postimg.org/4df2ka8bh/mbsa.gif ******* As for manually repairing Windows 7 so Windows Update responds in five minutes, the recipe must be verified after each Patch Tuesday. So the results of my last test are now invalid. In Internet Explorer, you can visit links like this, to get security updates. http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...aspx?q=3020369 http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...aspx?q=3172605 The first one is the April 2015 Servicing Stack. If the second update says "Not Applicable", you install 369 first. The '605 has a patch for Windows Update, but it really shouldn't fix anything. Each month it must be tested for new symptoms. And '605 could be removed from the server at any time. They removed the previous version of that one. The bug/root cause for this behavior, has existed since WinXP, so it's been around a long long time. The description for what is in '605 is here. The '605 has more than one patch inside, and this is one of them. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161647 "An optimization that addresses long scan time for updates that's reported on some computers." This is, of course, a lie. The optimization must occur at the Microsoft end, by editing the 150MB manifest file and fixing the damn thing. And that's why I've concluded the behavior will remain variable, and change after each Patch Tuesday. ******* If you sit on your hands for 8 to 12 hours and do nothing, the window with the information will eventually appear. Good luck, Paul |

Is there a go-slow on providing Windows updates for Win 7?
In article , says...

The slow update is the same reason it has been for several months. One of the updates involves updating the kernel drivers. Unless you have applied the June or July optional rollups, which were also available as a recommended update in September, Windows Update has not been updated to fix the bug. With the rollup update, Windows Update no longer hangs trying to process the kernel drivers. -- If there is a no_junk in my address, please REMOVE it before replying! This may be an after-effect of not following the Fix W7 Update Hang advice. This worked for me. I don't know whether it will work after October 11: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...6b36d0c?auth=1 Thanks Wolf and Paul The solution worked, even today 12 Oct. Windows Update is downloading 5 updates as I write. |

So the method is still working well enough to use for the month of October. Paul |
