Default Hangs in Windows 10 after update KB3194496

Is any one else experiencing lock ups after the installation of this
cumulative update?

Yesterday my computer locked ups many times. I could not get to the
task manager to see what was going on. There was no specific program
that I was in when the system hung. This morning it is better, and the
one time it started to lock up I did a reboot and then it was fine again.

My system Toshiba C55, Intel i3 2.5GHz 64bit, 4.0GB Ram

As I said it hung on both 64bit programs like the task manager and on 32
bit programs like Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.

I mostly run xbuntu in a dual boot machine, but I did upgrade from
windows 7 to windows 10, and the latter is fully updated. I haven't seen
any of the problems people complain about, the exception being the
cavalier way in which windows commandeers the machine when shutting down
or starting up when automatic updating is allowed.

My update of that KB was installed on 10/1/16. No problems to
date. HP Envy 700xt CTO Desktop, i7, 64bit, 8.0GB Ram, Windows 10
Pro.

I noticed a long delay, and non responsive behavior when I turned on my
Win10 notebook after the update.

I have DSL and use rasdial.exe to start the connection after I log in.

The terminal window opened to execute the command and just sat there,
couldn't move the mouse pointer or anything. After a minute or so the
program executed and I didn't notice any problems using Firefox or
Thunderbird afterward.

Yes I had that problem turn up on my 8-core AMD box after the latest
roll-up upgrade. The lockups were random and quite annoying.

What I did to fix my box was to use the "Reset this PC" option.
The one found under "This PC | Update & security | Recovery | Reset this
PC". I told the program to not keep any of my old files or programs and
then let it have at it.

After it finished I re-installed my programs and put my data back on to
the drive from backup files. So far I have had zero crashes or boots
since my "fix", about 24 hours.

One thing I noticed was that while it installed the latest version of
W10 it also kept all my drivers, so I did not have to track down my old
bunch of drivers to finish restoring the box.

Good luck, it worked for me but who knows what it will do for your
machine, especially since this is a Microsoft product...

Sorry about not responding to the responses to my question, but there
was a hurricane. One of the things I learned was I do not have
telephone or internet without power (U verse phone and internet).

Now after two days with out power I am finally getting back to fixing my
computer which has continued to degrade, and now when it comes up I must
do hard shutoff almost every time I turn it on. When I turn it on after
the HARD shutoff it comes up and works; so far.

I want to do a "Reset this PC" but read I need to create a Disk or
thumbdrive as part of the reset operation.

Will this software created during the reset fit on a 640MG disk, or
should I use a 4.5GB DVD?

Have not found answer to my question, but found additional ones. On one
site it says that manufacturer programs would be deleted. While some
are worthless, I would hate to lose some that do basic functions like
upgrade drivers etc. Does any one know if the Toshiba Satellite C-55
programs can be reinstalled?

I would think that Windows Update would take care of driver updates.

When I did my system reset the computer either kept or re-used the
existing drivers. This can be a plus or bad if the problem is traced to
bad drivers. With bad drivers I'd do a complete reload, as in deleting
the old partitions and forcing the OS to install all over again from
either a DVD or USB drive.

As for the size of the downloads, if you only download one bit size, as
in 32 OR 64-bit OS it will fit on a standard DVD or I believe a 4 or 8GB
USB drive. I usually tell the windows media creator I'm downloading the
OS for a different PC which then opens up the option of 32, 64 or both
and I grab both. My reason is I use the same flash to install which
ever version I need at the time I'm fixing something. To download both
versions I use a 16GB flash drive. The dual OS takes 8.28GB of space
leaving me quite a bit of room to load most of my utility program
installers on the flash drive. Just remember when creating the flash
drive it will format it so don't load your own programs on the flash
until Microsoft is finished installing their stuff. Do not tell the
media creator program you want to download both versions of the OS if
you plan to burn to a DVD. The double download does not fit on a
standard DVD at all.

You do have the option of trying to refresh the OS and keep the existing
programs or basically deleting everything and having it refresh the OS
and eliminate all your download programs.

I deleted all my programs as I also suspected one of them might have
also been causing me problems and I wanted to install things in a more
methodical method to try and verify if one of them was causing problems.

It appears that along with the OS corruption the 64-bit version of
CoreTemp was fighting slightly with my Asus AMD motherboard drivers.
With that program installed when the temp approached my set alarm level
my PC would lock up rather than generate the expected warning message.

Long winded but hopefully it helps someone.
