SP2 from MSDN?
I see Windows XP SP2 listed on the MSDN downloads site. Is this the
official release? I d/l it, installed it. I thought it was supposed to be build 2180, but when I do a Winver I get the following: Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158: Service Pack 2 which sounds like build 2158. However, if I look at the AUTORUN.DLL file on the CD I burned I see 5.1.2600.2180 as the version of that file. So is this the correct official release? |

SP2 Behavior ...
a) Noticed it no longer says XP Professional on booting (in the splash
screen) but XP. Still says Pro on the Start menu. b) Firewall on by default (we all knew that), I had to turn it off to use the VPN to work (since the old Firewall was off by default not sure if this is new behavior). c) Upon boot, after logging in, takes quite a while before the first app will launch. Somewhere between 20-30 seconds. Did a defrag (incl. boot-time defrag) with Diskeeper to get it from 40 seconds to this length of time. |

Funny MS own website states the FTP and GOPHER are no longer supported in

SP2 Behavior ...
Frankly, it was about time that general support for Gopher was put to bed.
Those who still want to use it for a specialist application can use their own "3rd party" tools for doing so (and get better service from doing so). As for FTP, again, if Microsoft are choosing to discontinue their own FTP command line app then this again is probably a good thing for the majority of people who never use it (though I note that it still seems to be installed and working on my machine here which is running XP SP2 RTM). But in any case, thats still a long way from "FTP... It will not ever work again". For a start, it works just fine via my browser, my 3rd party FTP app (filezilla), and as I said, the command line appears to be working fine here too. SP2 from MSDN?
Nothing can be made complete monkey proof, can it?
When ppl start downloading stuff randomly from random site and install it, there is little that can help. Not even a official RTM of SP2. If will make any mistake they can in future (like disabling firewall -- some guy told me it speeds up my Download speed, my ping time, my upload speed/// same for AV programs.... etc etc). Ppl that *want* to know if the realle have the official RTM should dl it via windows update only. But yeah, patience 1.0 hasn't RTM'ed yet............. It's like thinking a tiger i just a big friendly cat... ;-) Have a nice day! "Brian S. Bergin" wrote in message ... "Ronald" wrote: I d/l it, installed it. Guys, the question was about the MSDN SUBSCRIBER site. Not a random site.
You should read more carefully. Subject line, eh? "Ronald" wrote in message ... Nothing can be made complete monkey proof, can it?
