Default XP is using 2G of memory

I am wondering why so much memory is being used. I have stopped the
automatic backup procedure and that hasn't helped. Does anyone have any idea
why it is using so much RAM?

Memory ? where is XP telling you it's "using" RAM ?

Do you have a performance problem ?

Very few PCs have 2GB of RAM (256mb is enough) but XP, and all modern
operating sytems, expand to make good use of all the physical memory
it's got.

Unused memory is wasted memory.

This almost sounds like you are talking about disk space, but 2GB is
too small for an XP setup.

Richard

Are you saying you have 2 gb RAM memory and all is being used?

Where / how are you getting information about memory usage?

What checks have you conducted for viruses and spyware?

Hope this helps.

1. How much RAM do you have?

2. Where do you see that WIndows is using 2GB?

3. Wanting to minimize the amount of memory Windows uses is a
counterproductive desire. Windows is designed to use all, or
nearly all, of your memory, all the time, and that's good not
bad. Free memory is wasted memory. You paid for it all and
shouldn't want to see any of it wasted.
Windows works hard to find a use for all the memory you have all
the time. For example if your apps don't need some of it, it will
use that part for caching, then give it back when your apps later
need it. In this way Windows keeps all your memory working for
you all the time.

XP tries its best to find *some* use for all of RAM at all times. Even
trivial uses like caching every file so far accessed just in case. Such
things will be dropped instantly if something better comes along, but
expect to see all of RAM in use. The Task Manager 'available physical
memory' should really be 'memory for which there is currently no
conceivable use at all

true alex, xp tries to keep all memory invested.

however the free memory list also includes pages on the stand by
list...in other words, there's even data in some of the ram listed on
the abailable memory list
