Is there any sort of error message or failure code being reported when
this happens?

That information will help identify the cause of your problems.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed
Icon in the Status Column. What does it say?

Hope this helps.

You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from
Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336/en-us

When searching for available updates on the Update site, you see the 0x80070002 or
0x80070003 error

well gerry, where it all started was cause i kept getting this error thing
after boot up of angen.exe error wich i had no idea what it was so i came on
here and somone said i needed to get this free scan thing and see what i
might have on my pc so i think it was clean it pro somthing like that and so
i ran the scan and it said i had a couple things and one of thwm being a
virus called updates from win32.Alcra.A where it stops ur updates from
installing i guess and stop a couple of services or programs or somthing and
norton said they couldnt help me when i chated live with them sop i just
clicked off my automatic updates cause the pc would act funny cauyse it would
keep popping up telling me updates were ready to install and that got
annoying so i dont know where to go from here i dont know how important its
going to be to not install updates from now on but i am at a brick wall with
this.
