Default Fan speeding up with cover on

Building a new system and want to use my existing case. Moved the entire
system to an older case, MB/PS/CD/DVD/video card etc. Noticed that the cpu
fan runs about 2580 rpm without the side of the case on and when I buttoned
it up, I noticed an increase of the cpu fan up to 5600 rpm after 10 minutes.
As soon as I removed the cover, the rms dropped back to 2500 rpm within 30
seconds. I have one fan pushing in from the front and two pushing out on
the rear. I am thinking a might have to build a "chimney" for this
thing....any ideas?? TIA
