"Google" has disappeared!!
I've been unable to log on to "Google.com" on my PC for
several weeks. This P4 PC runs Win XP Home Edition and Internet Explorer 6.0. I keep Symantec AntiVirus (corporate edition) updated and running via a cable modem. Until a few weeks ago "Google" was accessible by typing in the address or by using "Favorites". Suddenly, it seemed, Google disappeared: a "404 Error" ("...the page your browser has requested is not on this server..."), or "The page cannot be displayed" page may appear, or another strange page which I haven't seen for about a week or so. I'm having no trouble with other pages. All other connections seem to work. Several Symantec scans have yielded no virus, although one did pick up a "worm" which it quarantined. A tech aide for my ISP said I should clear out all the cookies, but there are hundreds, some of which I'd like to keep. Anyone with similar experiences? Solutions? |

Try Spybot Search and Destroy or Adaware. http://www.safer-networking.org/ http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ |

Hi Gerry,
It sounds like you may need to adjust your firewall security and/or ad-blocking software settings (you could try temporarily disabling them to test for this). Also, try deleting your temporary internet files (it would be preferable to do this after performing the above). HTH. -- t@k (Invalid return address. Please reply to newsgroup). |

If it's just Google and no other URL's I'd check for a DNS problem. On
win98SE and earlier, you could enter the URL www.google.com in the hosts fike and point it at 127.0.0.1 if you were using a proxy like Proxomitron. When windows looked up the URL, to get it's numerical equivalent, it would look in the hosts file to see if it was already listed, for faster lookup. If it was pointed at 127.0.0.1, it would be blocked. I'm not sure if XP works the same, but it's worth looking in the hosts file in system32/drivers/etc to see if Google is entered there. If it is, remove that entry and save the hosts file. This would apply if you are using a proxy. They couldn't compete against MSN search... people loved the irrelevent results from MSN better. |

Try flushing your dns table. Go to a command prompt. Type
ipconfig flushdns then try it. -----Original Message----- Hi Gerry, It sounds like you may need to adjust your firewall security and/or ad-blocking software settings (you could try temporarily disabling them to test for this).
