Black Screen on User Logoff (after SP2)
Umm....first off I don't have the answer, but I felt compelled to reply that
I have the exact same problem which I posted a few days ago. Also downloaded SP2 which says it has a fix for this exact problem but it didn't work for me either.....at least its good to know its not just me..... "jamman710" wrote: First, thank you to all the very knowledgeable and generous people who provide such great info on this forum.... Before installing Windows XP SP2, I was experiencing the problem described in KB 328934 ("Windows XP stops responding (hangs) when you log off the computer if more than one user is logged on" - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328934) As described in 328934, if more than one user is logged on and one logs off, the system does proceed to save data and log the user off, but then the screen goes black and the system is unresponsive. I can recreate the problem by as is decribed in 328934: - You log on to the computer as one user. - You switch to another user without logging off as the first user. - You run a program in the context of the first user. - You log off the computer as the second user. I saw that this problem was addressed in the fixes of SP2 (http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;811113), however I continue to have this problem consistently even after installing SP2. My only way around it is to just not log off! Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

Black Screen on User Logoff (after SP2)
Hey, I read another post about the same issue. The guy recommended changing
the power management settings. I set mine to "minimal power management" which is one of the available schemes in the drop down menu. I tried logging off with another person logged in and running a program and it actually logged off and no black screen... Like you, I have the same problem both before and after installation of SP2.
Has anyone been able to obtain the HotFix that is referred to in the KB article 328934? Since I have an OEM version of XP Pro, I cannot obain free support from MS ... they refer me to Dell. Hot fixes are available to anyone, regardless of the OEM or retail - they don't come from the vendor. Did you call the phone number listed in the KB article? |

Hi Hotfixes are available for free directly from Microsoft, even if you have an OEM version of the OS. As the article states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to the Knowledge Base Article number (328934) and ask for nothing more. You will need to find the phone number from he http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS In the wizard, Select WinXP, and Basic, and then "It was purchased separately" For USA, you end up here http://support.microsoft.com/default...us;Prodoffer31 Use phone number 425-635-3311 -- torgeir, Microsoft MVP Scripting and WMI, Porsgrunn Norway Administration scripting examples and an ONLINE version of the 1328 page Scripting Guide: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...r/default.mspx |
