How can I modify Windows so that whenever I try to invoke Word, a different program runs instead? "Invoke Word" says *nothing* about just how you are doing that. Could be you are using a shortcut on your desktop or in the Start Menu or as a tile alongside the Start Menu. Could be you are using a command line to run the program. Could be you are double-clicking on a file shown in File Explorer. Could be you are using Cortana with its verbal commands. Could be some other program where you do something that invokes whatever is the default filetype handler. We don't know. You didn't say. Have you actually installed another editor? Its install, or its settings, should let you make it the default. However, Windows 10 protects a lot of common filetypes, and requires intervention by the user to choose the default handler for a filetype. Have you tried right-clicking on whatever file you are trying to edit in a different program, selected Open With in the context menu (you might have to Shift+rightclick), and in the wizard picked that other editor (and checked the box to remember your choice if you want it permanent)? You could go into the Default Programs wizard, select "Set defaults by app", select your other editor if listed, click Manage, and pick the filetypes that are currently assigned to Word to change their associations to whatever other editor you installed. If the other editor isn't listed, you could still use the Default Programs wizard, select "Choose default apps by file type". Click on whatever is the current handler for the target filetype. If your other editor isn't listed as an option (and don't waste time getting lured by Microsoft to their app store), that means the other editor did not properly register itself as an alternate handler. You can try to uninstall and reinstall the other editor, contact the author of that software to request help, or visit the web forums for that other software. Can't be more specific to you because you never mentioned which other editor you intend to use or have installed. Vague inquires get vague responses. |

You do need to install LibreOffice, or Open Office, or WPS Office, or Word Perfect Office, or some other office suite, and here’s the critical part: 1 launch Settings 2 click on Apps & Features 3 select Default Apps 4 select Default Apps by File Type 5 reset the defaults to the apps of your choice. 6 quit Settings and drive on. Many people keep MS Office around, not for love of MS, but because MS Office simply has features other office suites lack, and sometimes you need those features. |

You do need to install LibreOffice, or Open Office, or WPS Office, or Word Perfect Office, or some other office suite, But that's not right. You can install a suite, but that's not necessary. You need to install whatever word processing program you want, without regard for whether it's in a suite or not. and here’s the critical part: Yes, that's the critical part. 1 launch Settings 2 click on Apps & Features 3 select Default Apps 4 select Default Apps by File Type 5 reset the defaults to the apps of your choice. 6 quit Settings and drive on. Many people keep MS Office around, not for love of MS, but because MS Office simply has features other office suites lack, and sometimes you need those features. I'm one of those who greatly prefer WordPerfect to Word. I keep Microsoft Office around, but not because of any particular features. I do it because I greatly prefer Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint to anything in WordPerfect Office. I am greatly opposed to the idea of "suites" of programs, whether office suites or any other kind. I want to use whatever program I think is best in each category, without regard for what "suite" it may be in. -- Ken |

The easiest way to run a different program is to "invoke" a different program. Sounds like the poster is referring to file extensions, but is he that sophisticated? Let's assume he is... Right-click on a DOC file Open with Choose another app select the app you want and check Always use this app to open .doc files |

It would be nice if one of these 'open offices' had a decent email program to compare with Outlook on desktop. Microsoft has a choke hold in corporate deployment of e-mail software. The number of private end-users of Outlook is piddly compared to the huge populace of enterprise licensing customers. To other suites, an e-mail client is a bit of a waste of effort with a lot of headaches to support. Thunderbird is hardly the only free choice. Then, of course, you're comparing freeware to payware. There are several payware choices to MS Outlook. Before you mention it I don't like Thunderbird as they keep updating the program before the extensions are updated. Mozilla is not in control over what extension authors do. Being late is a problem with the extension authors. THEY wait until there has been a change in Thunderbird which requires them to modify their extension; i.e., they don't change until they must. Even then, they dally around applying an update to their extension, or they're not sure they will update their code (they may abandon it if too many or too difficult changes are needed). Also, in the past, for apps running under Windows, app authors have gotten burned by Microsoft: the app authors make changes in preparation for changes in Windows, but the changes don't happen, or they happen differently than proposed, so the app authors have to redo or add more changes. The same happens with extensions: what was proposed doesn't show up, so they wait. You're also assuming extension authors are immediately attentive to changes in whatever parent program to which they are an extension. Few are, and often those have a payware channel. Making money (or losing it) provides motivation. Altruistic works are not so avid for change. Mozilla makes announcements of major changes to their products, like moving to Webkit Extensions, and even provides information on how to migrate or adapt the old code, and those announcements are 1 or 2 years before the change, but extension authors don't prepare. Mozilla is not in control over what extension authors do. |

I have been using LibreOffice for years. I have very little need of a spreadsheet or presentation software. Very occasionally I have had to use Word to open a file LibreOffice can't or won't, then write it out in such a way that the problem is made to go away. This used to be a larger problem before the development of the .od(x) file formats. As an example, I proofread books for a couple of authors before they are published. One that I am currently working on sends me files in . DOCX format, and whenever I go to save the file LibreOffice reminds me that some formatting may be lost by saving to DOCX instead of ODT. |

I do a lot of research research. This requires a lot of formally written summaries and articles for submission for publishing. I also do a lot of work with spreadsheets. While I have use MS Office, I find that all of my needs are met by the Word Perfect Office suite. I use the student and home addition, that cost about 1/5 (On sale) of what MS office cost. I have never needed any thing the Word Prefect can not provide. It provides all of the normal MS Word Functions and can read and write all of the standard document fomats including all of the from MS The one thing that Word Perfect offers that is not available in MS Word, is the access to fromating codes. There is not any better way to correct formating problems than the Reveal Codes option. |

Just in case you are not awa You can configure Thunderbird not to update *and* not to nag about available updates. The latter is the important bit, because as long as Thunderbird can nag/prompt, you're bound to accidentily get an update which you don't want. If you want/need to know how to configure this, let me/'us' know. |
