Installing games on brand new laptop. HELP !! please

Can you please post the exact error message.
Does it complain about DirectX not being installed ?

I have just brought a pentium 4 laptop with windows xp.

have borrowed command and conquor of a friend and when i
tried to install it told me that me x drive wasn't up to
scratch. I have tried to install it off the c&c disk but
that don't work and if i tell it to ignore that then it
installs but won't let me load up due to a quick path not
being found.

I am a bit of a novice so some help would be wicked, am i
missing something simple or have i brough a duff computer
??
