Default .PNG Graphics converter needed.

It seems that these .PNG images are being uses more and more lately on
the web. They normally load fine in a web browser, but if I save them,
and try to open them in a graphics editor, they either dont loadf at
all, or load and are all scrambled.

I dont have the latest graphic editing software (nor do I want it,
because most is too bloated).

What I do have, is
Photoshop 5.x
Paint Shop Pro 4.x
Paint Shop Pro 7.x

I'm running these on either XP or Win98se.

I can load .GIF, .JPG, .PCX, .BMP, and many other formats, with no
problems.

But these .PNG files can and mostly do load in some scrambled manner, or
wont load at all.

Is there some free software I can download that will convert these
images to another format? (BMP or PCX is my desired format choice,
because JPG is too lossy for editing). Batch conversions would be
preferred, but even if I have to do them one by one, that's ok.

The software needs to run on XP (Or Win98). I dont have anything newer.

You did not say how much you want to edit the files, so:
1) Irfan - IMO, the best photo viewer and somewhat editor ever made.
I use it daily for work. Old version links available if you click on History.
2) GIMP - Full blown graphics editor but not meant as a viewer.
I use it often for work. Old versions are available.

Get IrfanView.

It can read most graphic formats and save them as many others.

It isn't bloated, and can do most of the editing I want.

Ok, it seems everyone recommended Irfanview. I installed it, and it does
a fast and easy batch conversion. It seems to work pretty well as an
image viewer too. (I have been using ACDsee for many years). I dont
really care too much about using Irfanview as a graphic editor. I have
always used Paint Shop Pro, and that is what I like. Sometimes I use
Photoshop too, but PSP has always been my preference. So, once these
files are converted to another format, I edit in PSP or Photoshop.

I installed IrfanView 4.33, (from 2012), because that is the last
version that runs on Windows98, and I do all my graphic work on my Win98
machine because it's faster, and unlike XP, does not hang from graphic
overloads.

I am quite impressed by IrfanView, except one thing. For some reason, I
had about 25 PNG files that I saved, from a clipart website. They are
all pics of animals on a white background (on the web). When I open them
in IrfanView, the background becomes black on all of them. I converted
them to .JPG and to .PCX, and all of them continued to have the black
backgrounds. To make matters worse, something like a shadow on the
ground, which in a picture I tried to edit, had a very light gray
shadow, against the white background. That very light gray turned a very
dark gray, not far from black.

I can open these same saved files in Firefox, and the background is
still white like it should be.

This I do not understand.
