Default Windows CPU gadget

I have the standard Windows CPU / RAM gadget on my desktop, to monitor the
CPU use, wether something is going on. Now, I have a pentium core 2 and I
wonder which core gets monitored? Or does it show the average of the two?

Does it perchance have options to show all cores seperately? and can you
select how many to monitor? I know my drive monitor (size/free space)
has that kinda options.

No options, only display small or big...

He said he's using the "standard Windows CPU / RAM gadget". Leaving
aside that gadgets are now deprecated (because I deprecate the sort of
people who use the word "deprecated"), no, it doesn't: the only options
it has are size (small or large), opacity, and always on top.

I think his is a good question; I would _guess_ it's an average, since
that's (I think) what Task Manager does if you choose not to show cores
separately (which is its default). Should be fairly easy to check - open
Task Manager (_in_ its show-cores-separately mode), and do something
that uses one core extensively, and watch both TM and the gadget.

What happens when you compare the numbers from the gadget against the
numbers from task manager performance tab?

The gadget tends to indicate a few points higher than taskmanager.

BTW I don't need a larger gadget taking up space on the desktop.
The brief display is more than enough for monitoring if something is going
on / finished, e.g. updating, or suspicious processes on some web sites etc.

The standard Windows CPU speed gadget, CPU Meter, just uses the same
mechanism that the Task Manager uses to display a graph of CPU activity.
As you know with Taskman, you can show either a single overall CPU
activity display, or a per-core display. The CPU Meter uses the overall
activity. The overall activity would be closest to an average of all of
the cores.

If you want gadget that shows individual core activity, then you can
download either Core Temp gadget (along with the Core Temp temperature
monitor utility), or another one available is All CPU Meter.

That's just likely the result of monitoring the CPU on alternate ticks.
Taskman would monitor it at a certain rate, while the CPU Monitor gadget
would monitor at another rate, or offset by a little bit from Taskman.
