Cloud Drive Enigma
I'm now running two desktop computers, both HP, one Win7, the other
Win10. I've also added a Western Digital WDMyCloud drive directly LAN wired to a BT Home Hub 3 wi-fi router, as are both computers. Because I know the machine, I used the Win7 computer to initially install the Cloud Drive. And that's when the problems began. In Windows (File) Explorer the drive shows up under the general heading "Network" in the left hand pane, and is listed twice with direct access to two web sites, WD and Twonky. However, it doesn't show up as a normal drive, so I can't access it to load and play any media files. (Remember the 2.3Tb of data I wanted to transfer between two external USB drives!) However, it does show up correctly on a Mitchell & Johnson media player and a Samsung Smart TV, both downstairs and connected to the router via wi-fi, and I am able to play music and video files easily on both. When I switch on the Win10 computer, again two instances of the Cloud drive appear under the network heading, and the drive is listed as a normal data drive so I can load, delete and play the files from there. So far, so good. And lo-and-behold, with the Win10 computer switched on, the drive also appears correctly on the Win7 machine. Closing down the Win10 computer, and the drive disappears from the Win7 machine. If I had installed the drive with the Win10 computer, I could understand this, working along the lines that possibly the installation computer contains some special driver files, which are only active when that computer is switched on. But I installed it through the Win7 machine, and it's that machine that won't show the drive when the other isn't active. Access downstairs works correctly regardless of the state of either computer upstairs, so this is no real problem. After all, that is why I bought the drive, so I don't have to have a computer switched on to play the media in the comfort of the living room. But the question remains, WTF is going on????? [I know there are issues with WDMyCloud drives and Twonky regarding file listings on media players (I've found a workaround for that one), but this shouldn't affect the accessibility of the drive on computers (should it?)] jim |
