Default Cannot Save Setttings

Hi:

I went over to a friend's house today to help him with a printer problem
(would not print) and ran into all kinds of other problems.

He has a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop running XP Pro SP3.

The first thing that I noticed was his laptop would go into the Saving
your Settings mode on Restart and just hang. Would have to power down to
reboot to system back up. Next I went to System Restore and noticed that it
was turned off so I tried to turn it back on and when I hit Apply it also
would hang and not allow SR to be turned back on.

Next IE would not open and I went to Customize Start Menu and tried to
change Show on Start Menu from Firefox to Internet Explorer and it would not
allow as it too just hung up. I would try to Restart the laptop and it would
again just hang at Saving your Settings and never Restart.

I uninstalled Spybot S&D and in the process it said it needed to reboot to
complete uninstall, but when it got again to Saving your Settings it just
hung again.

However, I did successfully make a change to his Desktop background screen
and also Menu screen.

Any help in finding a resolution will be appreciated.

Thanks,

ColTom2

P.S. Apparently his son in law had tried to reinstall the printer software
(driver) previously and never got the printer to work. I never did far
enough along to address this issue.

Run full scans with this program and an up to date AV program. Quite often
system hangs on shutdown are due to malware. Continue running these
programs until nothing else is detected.

If the hang continues, use the technique described in this article:
