Windows 10
My wife has Windows 7 on her laptop, but didn't know W10 was coming and
therefore didn't request a copy before its release. Does anyone know what Microsoft's position is on people asking for it after release? We've made the request but there's no W10 download after two weeks. -- Robin Bignall Herts, England |

Everybody with Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 is entitled to get a free upgrade to Windows 10. You can download it from Microsoft website or install this patch (KB 3035583 ) to get an icon in your systray to download the product in background; https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3035583 https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...load/windows10 Good luck. |

Just make a backup, OK :-) There's always someone out there who manages to trash their computer playing with this stuff. And that's why we have backups. You have 30 days to back out of the Win10 upgrade, after which you might need a mechanism to put your Win7 back. A backup is handy for that too. When it comes to the download logic, there are two directories used C:\$WINDOWS.~BT --- 6GB. Used by '583 GWX tray icon process. Running the setup.exe (or equivalent) from here, can do an install. The folder also happens to contain the drivers that Windows scanned for and obtained. Some installs are "gated" by the NVidia driver being broken. Or maybe hardware with dual GPU Optimus could be gated, as that stuff always seems to be broken. C:\$WINDOWS.~WS --- Used by MediaCreationTool. You get one chance to make media. AFAIK MediaCreationTool will erase its own directory on a second invocation (do the download over again). You might get to make USB key or an ISO9660 file. I would probably pick the ISO9660 file, for addition to my archive. MediaCreationTool will also clean out the ~BT folder, so if you actually have a full ~BT right now, and choose to run MediaCreationTool, it can wipe out the other folder. MediaCreationTool media should not contain the custom driver folder that the other one got. The media should be suitable for use on any machine, which means the GPU may come up in BasicDisplayAdapter mode, followed by Windows Update downloading of a driver set. Both do an installation, but the GWX upgrade icon, tries to get everything ready in advance (custom image). If you have an ISO9660 made from some other process, you can use the MicrosoftStore utility for converting the ISO9660 to a USB stick. Since the original page for this tool was removed, you can use the archive.org copy. For the first link, you have to be ready to push the "X" stop loading button on your browser, as soon as the page renders. The archive.org site continues loading some stuff that screws up the screen, for the first link. The second link, to get the USB flash key tool, should work OK. http://web.archive.org/web/201201022...usbdvd_dwnTool http://web.archive.org/web/201110052...B-DVD-tool.exe The Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool.exe tool design is a bit silly, in that it needs to write a boot sector on the USB stick. It *extracts* a copy of bootsect.exe from the ISO9660 file it is copying to the USB stick. This causes problems if the technician computer is 32 bit and the ISO9660 file is 64 bit, as a 64 bit copy of bootsect.exe won't run on a 32 bit computer. I fixed this, by extracting a bootsect.exe from a 32 bit ISO9660 file myself, and plopping it into the same folder as the Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool.exe program. That allows my WinXP (this machine), to prepare both 32 and 64 bit USB keys. So far, I haven't had a problem (that I can remember), with anything from Vista to Win10 era. If you use MediaCreationTool, it might cost you an extra download of the Win10 install content. HTH, Paul |

If you get tired of waiting, you can use the MediaCreationTool.exe from here. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...d/windows10ISO The GWX icon is supposed to have a menu item with a status, but the status hardly tells the user what is going on. At least, do a backup minutes before you start the install. You can back out if things go horribly wrong. Paul |

You can delay the install by closing the nag window. No nags yet.. -- Robin Bignall Herts, England |
