OT Router as access point
http://imgur.com/a/CI9oT
Page 1 is the basic settings for my router. I turned off DHCP and also set the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and I have also tried 192.168.1.10 On page 2 which is the advanced page I have also tried .2 and .10 The default gateway I have always used .1 I tested the setup both times and it worked for a while. What happens is that is seems to work, but when I shut down my Main computer for the night, when I turn it on the next day it is not connected to the Internet. The main router is in my room and it feeds a switch in the basement that feeds more rooms and one of those rooms has the spare router I want to convert to an access point. If I unplug the cable that feeds the switch and then the router and reboot my machine, it will connect to the Internet and I can then plug back in the switch and it works again. The main router, the only changes I made was to change the range to ..100 to .199 http://imgur.com/lm75diA I just reset the "access point" router back to factory settings. I set the local IP address to 192.168.1.2 Turned off DHCP. I went to the advanced routing page. Set the Operating Mode to "Router" Destination LAN IP to 192.168.1.10 and the router changed it to 192.168.1.0 Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0 The router tried to change it to 255.255.10.0 but it reverted back to 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway is 192.168.1.1 I saved settings and tested it. It is working like I expect it to, but I have the feeling that when I turn my computer off tonight and turn it back on tomorrow, it will be broken again. Any other suggestions? BTW the room that has the main router is the only computer that is ahead of the 8 port switch. |

BTW the room that has the main router is the only computer that is ahead of the 8 port switch. At the top of the general page in your posted image you have it set to "Automatic configuration - DHCP" What are the other available settings? On your primary router, the one acting as a DHCP server, have you reserved the address of the access point and assigned it to the MAC address of the access point? If you cannot reserve the address, then assign the access point an IP address outside the DHCP IP address range of the primary router, for example, let the primary router assign addresses in the 192.168.1.50 - 100 range and assign the access point an IP address of 192.168.1.2 - 49 or 192.168.1.101 - 254 . Let me know if this helps. Well today when I turned on my computer it had Internet access. That could be good news. Thanks everyone. |

I don't think we did anything. ;-) What you were originally doing, seemed like it should work, it would've been pretty much what I would do too. Why it would stop working, I suspect had to do with other factors besides the routers. Perhaps, the switch itself was having problems? BTW, instead of spooling Ethernet cabling throughout the house, I would've used a Powerline Ethernet connection. Yousuf Khan |
