Ejecting a HDD.
Is there any way to eject a portable (for off-site
backups) HDD from the Windows10 Navigation pane? Like is possible for USBs? Currently I have to ''offline'' in the Disk management! It's too bad to be borne! |

Currently I have to ''offline'' in the Disk management! It's too bad to be borne! If it's connected via USB, find Open Devices And Printers, and Eject them here. If they are connected via external SATA cables, a search on "How to mount and unmount external SATA drives under windows" should get you some useful advice. Good hunting! When a user in another group had this problem, it seemed to be related to the NTFS TXF file system feature the backup software was using. Even though the backup was finished, the TXF kept the storage device open, and only the "Offline" method made the drive available for "Safely Remove". https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...al-ntfs-portal In practical terms that a user can understand, normal I/O might be "smooth" to the destination backup disk. If the program uses TXF, about once or twice a second, "something" seems to update and the heads have to move from the current location, to some other location to do the update. So if TXF is being used, and you expect the I/O to be perfectly sequential... it isn't. You can "hear" some unnecessary low-frequency noise coming from the transfer as a result. It's supposed to allow unrolling a transaction easier, but I thought that's what the NTFS journal was for ? Paul |

The above anecdote suggests that the "forget it" part means the software will do things it shouldn't do, just to relieve the user of a minor decision or two. Just set it and forget it means you need to keep the external drive connected. I think that's a very bad mistake. It's essentially treating the external drive as if it were an internal drive. |

It's too bad to be borne! What brand of HDD is it? If WD (Western Digital), then look in the hidden icons panel for a WD-related program ('WD Access'?), Quit it and then retry the 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media'. What often helps for me is to hibernate/resume the system and then retry. |
