When clicked on it opens a window that says, among other things, most of the listed items are "unavailable." Right now it's running some kind of scan. "system volume information is in red. Nothing else. Uh oh. Rats! That "Uh oh" sounds bad. This message shows the link to the Tosh instructions http://al.howardknight.net/msgid.cgi?ID=152165126200 Thanks, but that doesn't work. All I got was a black screen with a dash in the upper right and loud irritating sound. That sounds much worse for the hdd than just missing the appearance of the sda2 icon on the desktop. I'm leaning, with my limited knowledge of computers, to believe the HD is toast. Linux also says, when sda1 was clicked on (bottom left above bar) that File doesn't exist pertaining to "system volume information." Sounds ominous, like the end of the line for his HD. -- Microsoft motto "If it ain't broke keep fixing it till it is." |

I opened it in Notepad. It was created when I downloaded the latest version of Macrium Reflect Free yesterday. The Macrium downloader gets an error and it doesn't download. Do you have an URL for a working downloader for Macrium? The file does not have a lock icon and is fully accessible. I'm talking about the folder on my computer, not through Notepad/Macrium. When you select a "Download Location" in the stub downloader, it has to be a folder that is write-able by your account. I made a TEMP folder on my L: drive, and told ReflectDLHF to dump the downloads into L:\TEMP . It isn't generally a good idea to just set the output location to L:\ or C:\ , because Windows doesn't like it if you write to the "root" of a drive letter. It's a kind of security issue. You can make a folder on your C: drive if you want, and dump the downloads in there. Then, move them later to a safe place. In File Explorer, select the Downloads folder (from the left where you'd normally do it), then place your cursor in the top bar, highlight the string up there, and that will tell you where your home is located. You can copy that string into the dialog in the Reflect downloader as a place where the final output is supposed to go. For example, if you use C:\users\john doe\Downloads, the program will eventually create a C:\users\john doe\Downloads\Macrium folder with the files in it. If you can at least get the main program to download, that is a start. The main program is available in 32-bit or 64-bit version. Select the one to match the OS of the machine you're installing on. If your C: drive right now, has "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)", then you're allowed to use the x64 version. v7.1.2963_reflect_setup_free_x64.exe 65,792,600 bytes v7.1.2963_reflect_setup_free_x86.exe 59,183,024 bytes (for a 32-bit CPU) OK, now run that chosen file on the computer you're installing on. (I call this the Technician Computer, because it's the computer that is fully working and not a flaming train wreck.) If you run the install, it should be able to install without any WinPE Kit at all. *Now*, start the program from the Start menu. You just finished installing it, and it should be ready to go to work. It will prompt you to "make an emergency CD". Good. It will notice you didn't download any WinPE during the original download session. The program is capable of downloading its own set of WinPE files, just like the stub downloader does it. The difference is, it will store the downloads in %temp% and it won't give any irritating prompts to "pick a download folder". A choice of either WinPE5 or WinPE10 should work. I can show you where it gets the WinPE downloads from. These are some paths for getting WinPE components. Tools http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...c75f2dcc4f.cab Files http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...410f004498.cab You can see the names of the files here. I'm *not* inviting you to use this URL, the text on it, just showing you how the stub uses some sort of manifest. This is for an older version of the program. There's probably a similar file for the version 7, stored elsewhere on the site. http://updates.macrium.com/reflect/v...0/features.xml If you prepare the emergency boot CD from the program, maybe the download step will work better for you. No guarantees of course, because I can't be absolutely sure what's wrong. I did see a Macrium forum post, where someone was actually getting a download failure, and the Microsoft server can always be "out of order" when the request is made. Servers break sometimes. Paul |

Toshiba W-7 went dark (loaded fatdog)
"J. P. Gilliver (John)" wrote in message ... In message , HB writes: It has a C: and D: I assume the D: partition is where the info comes from when you do a recovery or restore. If you mean you remember seeing that it had a D: partition when it was working, then that would mean that someone - possibly the manufacturer - had set it up with two user-accessible partitions; some enlightened manufacturers do indeed do this. What you use them for is up to you. Windows and most installed software is almost always on the C: partition. When I did a system recovery on the Tosh' when I first got it from my realtive used, isn't that where the "recovery" comes from? I had no disks for it. It was like new after the System Recovery. The recovery partition, if there is one, is usually not visible to the user when normally using Windows; if the user can see C: and D:, and there _is_ a recovery partition as well, then there will be _three_ partitions. On this HP desktop, I see a C: which says OS (operating system) D: which says (HP Recovery) F: which says (System) On the Tosh all I remember seeing was a C: and D:. -- Morality is doing what's right without the threat of divine retribution nor the possiblity of divine reward. - Arthur Paliden - I take that to mean, Fatdog doesn't "see" a second partition, meaning other partitions are damaged or the partitions are no longer in the partition table. Normally, I would try running "testdisk", but the interface is pretty horrible, and one of the operations involves starting a scan, stopping it, and *then* it presents a menu opportunity to examine the files inside the partition. A test disk through Linux? No, he meant testdisk, a _command_ you can run (type) in Linux. But he says it's not friendly, so probably not for us to consider for now. But for just displaying the existence of files in a partition, it's a great tool to have onboard. Beyond my capabilities. Even the smartctl report of Reallocated Sectors "raw data value" would be of some assistance. A ddrescue scan through Linux? If there's something to type into the command prompt in Linux let me know and I can try it. -- J. P. Gilliver. If you don't get the wizard and you are getting some kind of hdd 'noise' (particularly loud) I don't like that. I was hoping you would be able to restore the bad part with a good part. I don't like any kind of hdd noise. OTOH we see 3 parts with fdisk and an overall generic smart report of pass. There is no "send to" or I'd send it to a thumbdrive and move it to this PC, and upload it so all could see it. When you use the mtpaint snapshot tool, it opens the snapshot in mtpaint. Then if you are going to upload it to your screenshot place I think the easiest way to do it is to save the file whose default extension is .png. The default location that opens when you save from mtpaint is in root's directory. That is a problem for you which I believe the easiest way to solve is to drag the file from there to a folder inside the root's directory called Spot. My idea would be to use the default browser SeaMonkey to access your favorite postimg site and then when you want to feed the screenshot to the site with the browser, the browser opens a directory which does not contain the screenshot by default. But the browser's directory is two-pane with a Spot folder on the left and you click that to open Spot and the .png screenshot you saved with mtpaint and drug to the spot directory will be there and you can feed it to postimg. -- Mike Easter |

No; I wasn't thinking. Don't save the .png file in the default root directory. Use the file manager which appears when you are going to save the file to open the Spot directory seen in the L pane and save it there. There would be no need to open a filemanager to drag the file to Spot if you save it there.
