It opens your default browser with that web page. What did you expect? Why didn't you try it for yourself, rather than being curious? Because I did /not/ uninstall IE and do not plan to, even though I may not use it. I don't see that as relevant. The link opens in *your* default browser, as Ken said (my emphasis, though). The reason I asked is because I had no way to test it myself. Though I was curious I was not curious enough to install Win8 again and vpn into Europe to uninstall it. I have Win8 installed in a virtual machine and do not actually use it other than needing a reference when trying to help someone over the phone or on-line etc. What I was really trying to get at however...was to see what would happen if one had /no/ other browser installed. If the URL were resolvable in Windows Explorer..without having any 3rd party browser installed, that would mean that the IE really is still there. snip OK. By now, from this thread it should be clear that the HTML appears in a browser window, not in Windows Explorer. I hope that helps you, even if it's just to satisfy your curiosity :-) ....which is a valid motive, n'est-ce pas? -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Thanks The reason I was curious: Back with Win98 one could completely delete the file iexplore.exe but that file was not actually Internet Explorer... If one entered a URL into Windows Explorer, it would simply turn into Internet Explorer and I was just curious if Win8 did that too. Not a big deal though |

Not a big deal though Interesting - I didn't know that about Windows Explorer in W98. Ever since Win98, Internet Explorer has been an integral part of Windows and there was no way to entirely remove it. Being an experimenter, now that (at least in some localities) it seems possible to get a version of Windows with no Internet explorer, I was curious to see if it was really built-in. Since I'd guess that Windows updates would still work that would mean that as with Win98, the Internet Explorer engine is still there and that by "removing" IE, it was simply "muted". Also: if IE were /completely/ uninstalled how would other browsers that depend on IE's engine function? Again, my /guess/ is that the basic components of IE cannot be removed from Windows no matter what. |
