Default XP Home doesnt complete startup - no login screen

Try starting in safe mode (by hitting the "f8" key
repeatedly during startup) and do a system restore
Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\system
restore

If this doesn't work, try rebooting with the XP cd in the
drive and fix it from there.

All of a sudden, when I startup my laptop it seems to
boot up normal. Just before I should see my login

screen,
it freezes. Nothing happens. I never get to the login
prompt.

Any ideas????
