Default !! USB - IRDA Dongle help required, thanks in advance.

I have a usb/irda dongle (to use with my mobile phone) which shows up as it should as a wireless link, in the control panel/wireless link dialogue there are 2 check boxes, one which says 'Display an icon on the taskbar indicating infrared activity' and the
other states 'Play a sound when an infrared device is near'. My problem is, I have both these boxes checked but an icon does not appear and there are no sounds, even though I know my phone is connecting.
The infrared link can be troublesome at times but so far I've managed to get by, but it would be nice if the PC could give me some indication of a successfull connection.
Anyone got any ideas on how to get the taskbar icon to appear complete with sounds?

Many thanks in advance.

Nancy
