Default Network cable not plugged in....(message).......?

I have a dell dimension 200 desktop, running xp professional SP3 installed.
This computer is plugged directly into a linksys router with broadband
connection.

This morning i just started getting a message, "Network cable unplugged". I
have tryed to disable and re-enable the network adapter. I have tryed to
uninstall and reinstall the network adapter. I have tryed going into the
power managment setting and turned off the box to "allow the computer to turn
off this device to save power" and lastly, i tryed to change the value for
the "media type" property. When i changed this from "auot detect" to
100Mbps/full duplex, the message stopped appearing, but the properties box is
only showing out going signal and no incoming signal.

I do not understand because i also have two laptop computers with full
wireless connection through this desktop/router. Any ideas/suggestions would
be greatly appreciated!

1. Swap out the ethernet cable going to the router with a new or known-
working one and test. If all is well, discard the original cable. If not...

2. Move the ethernet cable to a different port on the router. If all is well,
you're done. Consider this a warning sign that it's time to replace the
router soon. If not...

3. Test the router by connecting a different computer (one of the laptops) to
the router with ethernet. If it fails, replace the router. If it is fine...

4. Replace the ethernet card in the desktop computer. An ethernet adapter is
very inexpensive. If you are current using an onboard one, of course you
can't remove it; just use the new PCI one instead. If you current have a PCI
network adapter, uninstall it in Device Manager, shut down/unplug the
computer, install your new adapter, start the computer, install the drivers
for the new adapter.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it.

i tried your suggestions and this is what i came up with:

step 1). no new cable available, i skipped this step

step 2). moved cable to another port, same problem

step 3). failed. i connected to laptop, disabled wireless adapter and
enabled wired adapter, got same messages.

step 4). skipped, because i now know it is either cable or router.

Question: How are laptops connecting through this connection (via router and
desktop), if router is possibly bad?

Does it sound more like a cable problem to you, and is it possible the
router settings got mis-configured somehow?

I would go to the store and get an ethernet cable to find out. An extra
ethernet cable isn't very expensive and is a useful thing to have lying
around. Then you will know for sure if it is the cable or the router. While
you're there, pick up a new router. You can always return it if you don't
open the box until after you've tested using the new cable.

There are no "router settings" to magically become misconfigured with your
ethernet. Since the same problem exists using another computer, you know the
issue is, as you say, with the cable or the router. My experience tells me I
would bet on the router, but there is no point in not testing the easier and
less expensive alternative of swapping out the cable.

thank you for your help...i really appreciate your time and assistance!

turns out it was the cable going between the router and broadband box. I got
a new router anyway because last one was over 4 years old and they are fairly
priced. anyway thank you!
