Default Dell Latitude E4300 will not start after KB4100403 installation

My Latitude E4300 laptop worked flawless until the KB4100403 was due for
installation. The installation was performed and a reboot was forced.
When booting, the laptop shows a litte blue circle, which can be moved
with the mouse. This condition lasts forever. The windows-10 functional
update 1803 is installed since May 2nd.

Any hints?

Klaus

try turning off bluetooth and/or wifi (IIRC there's a physical switch on
the Latitude E series for that?)

Hi Andy,
thanks for the answer. Yes there is physical switch, I turned it off.
But the result is the same. LT hang in boot sequence.

Oh well, it was a bit of a long shot, but had a similar issue once ...

Start the computer, wait ten or fifteen seconds, then press and hold the
power button until the computer shuts down. Do this twice and the third
time the computer should boot into the recovery environment.

Hi Ben
I made this several times. The only useable solution in recovery mode is
to restore the laptop using a system image. After that, the circle
starts again.

It's possible to back out a failed update, in offline mode.

The user "Cameo" did this, when a certain update bricked his
computer.

Updates are in two states, installed, or "install-not-finished".
The spinning balls at shutdown allow PendMove activities
before the reboot. There are also spinning balls during the
boot process, to finish installation of an update. An update
does not progress to the "installed" state, unless both spinning
ball sequences finish.

If the computer is bricked before it finished booting, you can
look into the offline "install-not-finished" recipe. What Cameo
found by Googling, is at the bottom of this post.

"I was able to use the original Win7 install DVD in Repair Mode
that gave my DOS command window where I entered:

DISM /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Because the corrupt package was not installed completely I was able
to use this shorter DISM command, instead of the longer

DISM /image:c:\ /remove-package /packagename: etc. command.

After the restart my Win7 booted up normally and the update history
shows that KB4056894 installation failed.
"

So that's a way you might be able to get out of it.

If you have a Macrium ReflectFree CD, you can make
a backup of C: , before trying any experiments...

Thanks's for all your help.
Deinstalliung the anti-virus software (avira) and performing a clean
boot did the job.
KB4100403 was installed without any problems.
