Attached should be the FULL contents of those 2 keys on my machine (XP Home)
Right-click either and choose edit to view their contents or just click on them to add their contents to the registry. Jon "JAX" wrote in message ... A response to a post about the infamous red X brought my attention to the registry. I too have been having problems with web page jpeg's. The response was from an MVP but, I was unable to post back to that thread. His advice directed the OP to change a value in the registry. I opened the registry to compare it with what he suggested. The string he mentioned was not even there. After some research, I believe that something I have installed has changed the defaults for both .gif and .jpg in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The only sub-keys that show in either are "OpenWithProgids" and "PersistentHandler". So far, I have failed to find information as to what should be there. I did, however, find a web page that offered a script to restore each to their default. Unfortunately, I found no indication whether his script was applicable to XP Pro. If anyone cares to look, the link is; http://www.waynescomputerworld.com/graphicassoc.html Could someone either confirm the validity of the offerings on that site or, point me toward more information on the subject? (BTW, my problem is not caused by temporary internet files and SR is not an option.) Hi Jax,
Start/Run/Regedit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg For Content Type, it should read "image/jpeg". HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg For content Type, it should read: image/jpeg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif For Content Type is should read "image/gif" If it already set to that, go to Start, Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll, regsvr32 /i shdoc401.dll,regsvr32 webvw.dll and regsvr32 thumbvw.dll (for upgrades). Those edits are written to Regedit4. Not that they are wrong, just not written specifically for XP. Most welcome and thanks, Jax! )
As per reg4 - it works universally in Windows. However, getting these edits from someone you don't know means you have to verify each and every value it contains to see if it was indeed meant for XP. Keys and values can differ greatly between Win9x and XP. As per reg5 - it only works in XP. I prefer keeping the edits separate between the operating systems. That way you know the one's you can modify without verification because it was either exported from or created for XP. Note: reg4 can be selected when exporting from XP. But again, when running across one, you really don't know from which type of system it was extracted from or created for.
