Default Third Party Uninstall Apps

Just got a Windows computer after not having used one for about 10
years. (Used Macs).

Back then, third party uninstall programs seemed to do a better job
clearing out residual debris and files left behind when uninstalling a
program than using the System uninstall routine.

Are these third party uninstall programs still needed with a fully
updated Wun 10 Pro 64 bit OS running on a fairly recent Dell Latitude
laptop?

I had occasion to uninstall some stuff and Win 10 seemed to do a pretty
good job.

billion dollars stored there. Apparently he had been trying to give it
away for over 15 years... but no one would return his emails.

It's the same thing. The system uninstall
option is only there because the software installer
registered an uninstaller (and optionally other
info) in the Registry. Strictly speaking, Windows
knows nothing of what software is running or how
it's installed. Since Windows didn't install the software
it would have no way of knowing how to uninstall it.

Typically you'll have something like an uninstall.exe
file in the program folder. The installer will then set
that EXE path in a key under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\

Windows loads those keys to show you what's
officially installed and thereby knows to call the
uninstaller if you decide to remove the software.

I have been using Revo without any problems. Programs will find stuff
in the Registry that the 'normal' uninstall passes over. While most of
the Registry leftovers will not cause problems, getting them gone will
not hurt.
If you have ever used the Norton or McAfee specific uninstall
programs, you will find that they suck.

+1 on Revo Uninstaller Pro.

You can use the free version for the everyday average normal user.

No you don't need any 3rd party uninstallers. They cause more problems
than you asked for so stay away from them.

You just need to master how to use and tame Windows 10 and it will do
everything for you magically. Windows 10 is the best OS around so make
use of it while you have access to it. The alternatives are worst to
put people off from using modern technologies.

I wonder why so many people care about this. I don't
remember ever having a program that wouldn't uninstall.
I have heard of people having trouble with Norton stuff,
and sometimes with .Net. But I can't think of anything
I've actually run into. You must do a lot of experimental
software installs.

Have I ever had software that left behind a shared
DLL? Not likely. Most programs are pretty good that way.
Most people follow Microsoft guidelines. (Except Microsoft,
of course.) And what if a shared DLL was left behind?
Who cares? Or maybe a few software settings could be
left behind in HKLM\Software? It's actually pretty clean there.

I do notice that some programs leave settings behind
in App Data. That doesn't bother me, as long as they don't
take up too much space. It will make things easier if I ever
decide to reinstall the product.

It's not about uninstalling, but about cleaning up the leftovers. Not
just registry entries, but folders and files.

I guess some people have a stronger yen for neatness than others.

Revo starts off by using the supplied uninstaller and then goes
looking for other bits and pieces. It's surprising how much it can
find including heaps registry entries that are no longer wanted.

I understood that. I just don't see problems.

I might have a few orphan keys under HKCR\CLSID\.
If so, they're harmless.

I raise the point because I think it's important to
note that these programs are a sort of hobby that some
people enjoy. But they carry some risk and provide
no truly useful purpose. You'd probably get about the
same results if you tried to improve your car's gas
mileage by giving it a "day of beauty": It "feels" like
a nice thing to do for the car, and in theory, washing
it might improve things by lowering air resistance...
in theory.

I have to agree with this. I notice that things in Windows 10 are
working better than they ever have before because I decided not to use
Ccleaner at all. Not only does it not automatically remove the junk on
the HD, it doesn't clean the registry either and things are fantastic.
If anything ever seems sluggish, I can use the built-in Disk Clean to
remove the junk in a way that Windows recognizes and can handle.
