Default WSUS on Windows 10 Pro?

Good day.

As usual lately, I need to figure this out quickly, any insight
appreciated. So basically, I want to know if Windows 10 Pro can be made
to get its updates from a WSUS server. Simple eh? If it can't (which is
what I think) and insists on getting them from Microsoft then my project
will end and the customer will investigate Windows 10 Enterprise later.

Today I joined a Win10pro 10586 laptop to the customer's domain, which
includes group policy for WSUS. I then "checked for updates" from the
Settings app and it reported several updates available, one of which was
update 1511, which is NOT on the customer's WSUS server. So I guess it
is not "taking" the group policy. So is this because group policy is
currently only setup for Win7 machines, and a NEW setting is there to
make Win10pro connect to the WSUS, or is it because Win10pro does and
will always ignore the WSUS server and get its updates from Microsoft?

Off to Google to try and find out.

Thanks all.
Best Regards,

PS: Hey GG, I was able to install Win10pro fresh on a Win8 system (you
know, with the Win8 key in the BIOS) and it activated automatically -
Thanks for the advice!

It's complicated, but I think you guessed that already.

Lol, yup :-) My Google-Foo was no good last night, I did not find a page
that said clearly if you could use WSUS on Pro, but I found plenty of
people having problems using WSUS and Win10pro (so I assumed you CAN use
WSUS) - problems such as machines downloading and installing updates the
minute they are approved on WSUS, and then rebooting 15 minutes later
regardless of Group Policy saying to let users have a choice of reboot
times. Your ZDnet article says clearly that yes, you can have Win10pro
connect to WSUS. And all that talk about Windows Update for Business
just means there are group policies that let you defer updates for some
time. Anyway, I had a talk with the SDM, we're going to recommend the
customer wait; we can't fully test Win10 with WSUS inside the 1 week we
have to do it, too many things have changed since W7 - there are
probably a ton of Group Policies we have to investigate, like that
"Disable Consumer Features" one, which prevents Win10 from installing
Candy Crush automatically (yup, that's exactly what Win10 did on my
customer's laptop).

Booze,

I have two instances of WHS2011 running at a clients location in VM's with
one running WSUS.

Yes- Win10 Pro will work with WSUS but....

It may take hours for the PC to be recognized in the WSUS - assuming you've
configured WSUS to update that particular computer and have Win10 Pro group
policy configured.

There is a shortcut to force the Win10 PC to be recognized right away but
it's been awhile and I don't have the info handy.

Bob S.
