IE search engines
This happens in Win10 with I.E. 11.1.171340 and Win7 with I.E.
11.0.9600.1897 (both latest updates). When I click "Add" under search engines it gets error 404 (page not found; http://www.iegallery.com/gb/searchproviders). Any suggestions? Or could it be that MS are currently meddling, and I should wait a day or two? Ed |

In other web browsers, you go to the search site, right-click on their searchbox, and elect to add to that search, or you can save bookmarks with the search string (as noted below) and use a keyword in the address bar to use the bookmarked search. Doesn't work in IE (don't about Edge). However, IE uses registry entries to store keyword searches. They're under the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl Each subkey has the name of the keyword you want to use and its default item's value is the URL for the search string but uses %s in place of the search term(s). For example, I have the following subkeys defined: Key name: s Default value: https://ixquick.com/do/search?q=%s Key name: g Default value: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s Key name: gi Default value: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=%s Key name: wiki Default value: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=%s and lots more (29 total keywords). I can use "g keyword search" (sans quotes) in any explorer address/search box. I can use it in the Windows Explorer address bar, in IE's address bar, in the Address toolbar in the Windows taskbar, and anywhere else the standard address/search object is available. |

I have IE11 on Win10 1709. Here, the link "Add" under search engines first goes to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=122812 which then redirects to http://www.iegallery.com/en/searchproviders which gives a 404 error. IE exact version is 11.371.16299.0 and with the April 2018 cumulative security update for Internet Explorer (KB4092946). -- Kind regards Ralph |

It is another example of how just about everything Microsoft does is half-assed. The links in IE are old and outdated. In other web browsers, you go to the search site, right-click on their searchbox, and elect to add to that search, or you can save bookmarks with the search string (as noted below) and use a keyword in the address bar to use the bookmarked search. Doesn't work in IE (don't about Edge). A few extensions don't work in Edge despite still being installable. In IE, they're mostly all outdated. Like I said, Microsoft does a poor job of impkementing things, maintaining them or outright introducing them. They are shockingly incompetent for a corporation and it's a shocker, to me, that the Xbox is well designed and updated. Everything else under them is a laugh including their old music store. Not cumbersome one bit. |
