October 2018 Update and Windows 10 version 1809.

How to install Windows 10 October 2018 Update early
https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-i...ate-right-now/

Like all Windows updates, there's almost nothing (if not exactly nothing)
that you can't already do in any version of Windows since XP but here's
what Redmond supposedly touts is "new" in the upcoming version 1809.[*] Cortana can search your Calendar[*] touchscreen SwiftKey keyboard [*] a better screenshot tool named screen sketch[*] the Your Phone app for iPhone and Android[*] less annoying incremental update restarts[*] dark theme for File Explorer[*] so called "extended web searching functionality"[*] clipboard history and sync[*] nearly meaningless Microsoft Edge improvements [*] Notepad finally can switch to normal EOF/CR line endings[*] Leap second support[*] fonts are available to all users (not just admins)[*] Regedit has "autocomplete"[*] Regional settings can override local settings [*] Disk cleanup now removes files in the downloads folder[*] Magnifier tool has more 10% & 5% options[*] Task manager has a "power usage" tab[*] Ease of access "make text bigger" switch[*] Windows defender can "block suspicious behavior"[*] Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer displays Problem Reports

https://www.ghacks.net/2018/09/01/th...r-2018-update/

While that's seeming nothing of any import, maybe others here know of
something (anything?) in the Windows 10 version that is actually useful?

[*] a better screenshot tool named screen sketch
[*] the Your Phone app for iPhone and Android
[*] less annoying incremental update restarts
[*] dark theme for File Explorer
[*] so called "extended web searching functionality"
[*] clipboard history and sync
[*] nearly meaningless Microsoft Edge improvements
[*] Notepad finally can switch to normal EOF/CR line endings
[*] Leap second support
[*] fonts are available to all users (not just admins)
[*] Regedit has "autocomplete"
[*] Regional settings can override local settings
[*] Disk cleanup now removes files in the downloads folder
[*] Magnifier tool has more 10% & 5% options
[*] Task manager has a "power usage" tab
[*] Ease of access "make text bigger" switch
[*] Windows defender can "block suspicious behavior"
[*] Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer displays Problem Reports

If the make text bigger was what everyone wants (the old format of
changing selected items like in windows 7), then this might be good.
I do like the new disk cleanup. Much easier to understand. I'm on the
insider version so I've already got it.

Some / alot of people like dark themes. I'm not sure why, but it's nice
they did that.

I think I'm on the same track as you, for the average home user, there
isn't much going on with Windows updates.

Thank you for explaining a bit more about the "make text bigger" as I
didn't really know what that was (but I generally don't change the text on
anything from defaults anyway, unless it's ridiculously small).

As a long standing Windows 7 laptop user, I don't see anything yet in
Windows 10 that would prompt me to move the Win7 laptops to this new
update.

About the only things I know I might ever use are the fact that Notepad
finally will (we hope) "wrap text" automatically, when it comes from
another platform (but I use gvim 99% of the time which already does that).

For screenshots, I use Irfanview or Windows+PrintScreen, so I don't think
the supposedly improved screen sketch is a big deal, nor would I have a
need for a phone app (since usb & wifi already work fine).

Maybe though, the phone app has a useful feature? I don't know.
Do you?

While I appreciate your disk cleanup comments, Ccleaner already does a
pretty good disk cleanup job for me.

Adding heuristics to Windows Defender might be a good idea, but most of us
have antivirus programs that already do that too.

The one thing I wasn't sure what it was this one:[*] Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer displays Problem Reports

Does anyone see any value in that feature?
Is there something valuable to you that the article I quoted missed?

While I don't think anything there isn't already in almost every commonly

Are any of those Edge features useful to you?
Did I miss anything on the Edge browser updates in 1809?

Exactly. White of a monitor much brighter than white of a piece of
paper. It is also why on TV interviewers rarely have notes on white
paper because of the intense studio lighting.

That page is better than the earlier reference in that it contains good
detail which includes screenshots.

It's always amazing to me for mature products like Windows was back in the
days of XP onward, that, even with thousands of developers working on it,
they still don't much that is useful that can't be done in Windows 7.

You'd think something would be better appreciably, but looking at the
release page, nothing sticks out as particularly useful except that they
say they removed a few annoyances (like Notepads' wrapping propensity).

Your detailed article linked to the "Best 7 Features of 1809"
https://pureinfotech.com/windows-10-...-new-features/

They list these best 7 features as
1. File Explorer dark mode
2. Cloud-powered clipboard
3. Search experience
4. Screen Sketch screenshot tool
5. Storage sense with OneDrive cleanup
6. Change system font size
7. Your Phone

Since I still have Windows 7 laptops, I always look at what is in Windows
10 to see if there is anything compelling.

I don't see anything compelling. Do you?

Your reference also linked to the 10 best hidden features of 1809
https://pureinfotech.com/windows-10-...dden-features/

1. Typing insights
2. SwiftKey
3. Print Screen mapping
4. Windows HD Color
5. Adjust video based on lighting
6. Locally available cloud content
7. Windows Update reboot logic
8. Microsoft Edge media autoplay control
9. Microsoft Edge Web Authentication
10. Microsoft Edge dictionary

Is anything there compelling?

If not, how can it be that thousands of people labor on a release, and
there still isn't much compelling over Windows 7?

I'm unsure about the cloud based clipboard, as clipboards may well
contain clear password details as users open commercial web pages.
Other than that, it's another step forward for MSFT's premium OS
with a few more corners sanded smooth and Edge improved even more.
What's not to like?

I generally take the opportunity of new Win10 major releases to
clean install into a cleared partition (previously holding the
earlier Win version), getting rid of all the clutter accumulated
over six months. Obviously I take care to preserve key data
somewhere else first. New stuff like Swiftkey has got to be good!

I can't imagine wanting my clipboard "shared" ... I just can't.

I don't see any value in sharing a clipboard other than to people who can't
network between their own devices using their local LAN.

I agree that there are a "few more corners sanded", but you'd think that
Windows 10 would have "something" super useful that people can't do on the
older Windows.

I don't see any compelling reason to move my laptop from 7 to 10.

and Edge improved even more.

The problem with Edge is the philosophy. And the competitions'
philosophies. There are plenty of browsers that serve peoples needs better,
where I think Edge tries to serve Microsoft's needs instead.

For example, where is the private mode or the ability at least to open the
browser in a mode that doesn't remember anything when the browser is closed
(which all other browsers have)?

What's not to like?

The lack of private browsing perhaps?
(If it's there, you can correct me where I can't fathom why it wouldn't be
there.)

I need that!

I don't have a mechanism for a "clean" reinstall of Windows without having
to also install all my programs again and again.

Is it even possible?

MSEdge is not only a bit weird, it's really weird.

People mention that launching from powershell is
different than from Command Prompt. One way to launch
it, is with a "protocol specification", which if MSEdge
is your default browser, causes MSEdge to open.

The above method looks like the new command line capability
for Metro Apps. Which is actually opening the browser as
an application, rather than waking it up with a protocol
specification.
